USHLI Presents Student Leadership Series Event At Benito Juarez High School
|
An estimated 150 students, mostly seniors, and educators participated in a Student Leadership Series event at Benito Juarez High School in Chicago, IL. The focus of the presentation was to encourage students to stay in school, improve their academic performance, graduate, and pursue some kind of post-secondary education or training. A college fair was held prior to the presentation.
The event was hosted by the school Principal Juan Ocon, and coordinated by Community Connector Felipe Mejia. The featured speaker was Ernesto Mejia. Dr. Juan Andrade conducted an orientation on USHLI's Grassroots Leadership Development program, where students may learn more about how city, county, and school governments work and how people can make government work more effectively.
USHLI's participation was an extension of the Student Leadership Series. This was our 41st SLS event of 2012, bringing the total number of students, parents, and professionals served to 46,618 in 21 states. The next stops for the Student Leadership Series are Chicago, IL (11/2-3), Boise, ID (11/6), Yakima Valley, WA (11/7-8), Omaha, NE (11/7-8), Hammond, IN (11/7-9), Boston, MA (11/8-9), Portland, OR (11/9-10).
The primary goal of the Student Leadership Series is to ensure that every Latino family has a student that is one of the following: the 1st student to graduate high school; the 1st student to enroll in post-secondary education or training; the 1st student to graduate post-secondary education or training. The USHLI 2012 Student Leadership Series officially launched February 16th and consists of Stay-in-School Rallies for middle school and junior high students, Career & College Recruitment Fairs for high school students, Regional Leadership Summits for college students, and, if possible Parent Leadership Training and Professional Development events.
