An estimated 500 students, parents, educators, university administrators, and community leaders in Columbus, OH participated in the 2nd annual Gates Millennium Bridge Builders Forum, which was organized, hosted, and conducted by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at The Ohio State University. Students came from throughout the state of Ohio to participate in the Forum, which included breakout sessions on getting to college and paying for college.
The partnership was, in large part, the result of the leadership provided by the Ohio Commission on Latino/Hispanic Affairs and its Executive Director Liliana Cavanaugh. The featured speaker was USHLI President Dr. Juan Andrade. Representing OSU was Assistant Provost Dr. Yolanda Zepeda and Forum Coordinator Maria O. Sanchez.
USHLI's participation was an extension of the Student Leadership Series. This was our 40th SLS event of 2012, bringing the total number of students, parents, and professionals served to 46,468 in 21 states. The next stops for the Student Leadership Series are Chicago, IL (11/1-3), Boise, ID (11/6), Yakima Valley, WA (11/7-8), Omaha, NE (11/7-8), Hammond, IN (11/7-9), Boston, MA (11/8-9), and Portland, OR (11/9-10).
The primary goal of the Student Leadership Series is to ensure that every Latino family has a student that is one of the following: the 1st student to graduate high school; the 1st student to enroll in post-secondary education or training; the 1st student to graduate post-secondary education or training. The USHLI 2012 Student Leadership Series officially launched February 16th and consists of Stay-in-School Rallies for middle school and junior high students, Career & College Recruitment Fairs for high school students, Regional Leadership Summits for college students, and, if possible Parent Leadership Training and Professional Development events.
Persons interested in hosting SLS events in 2013 should contact Dr. Juan Andrade at docandrade@ushli.org.
