Under the leadership of Senator Juan Pichardo, an estimated 1,800 students, parents, and educators attended our first Student Leadership Series events held in Providence, RI. The featured speakers were Carlos Ojeda and Ernesto Mejia. According to Senator Pichardo, the students were definitely impacted by the uplifting, moving, and inspiring power of our speakers. The teachers, counselors, and administrators were very impressed and immediately invited USHLI to come back in the spring of 2013.
In addition to Student Leadership Rallies, the series of presentations also included a Parent Leadership Training element and an interview on Latino Public Radio as well.
The schools hosting the series of events were: Providence Career and Technical Academy, Central High School, Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School, Gilbert Stuart Middle School, Roger Williams Middle School, The William B. Cooley Sr. High School, The Providence International Studies High School, and Central Falls High School. USHLI is very grateful for the support and cooperation received from everyone at these schools.
USHLI's participation was an extension of the Student Leadership Series. This was our 37th SLS event of 2012, bringing the total number of students, parents, and professionals served to 44,708 in 20 states. The next stops for the Student Leadership Series are the Bronx, NY (10/25-26), Columbus, OH (10/27), Chicago, IL (11/2-3), Ogden, UT (11/5), Jerome, ID (11/6), Boise, ID (11/6) Yakima Valley, WA (11/7), and Omaha, NE (11/7).
