
An estimated 215 students, educators, university administrators from five academic institutions, elected officials Hon. John M. Haroldson, the first Latino District Attorney in Oregon, and Hon. Anabell Jaramillo, the only Latina Commissioner in Benton County, OR, and community leaders in Oregon participated in the university's Hispanic Heritage Month program. The featured speaker was USHLI President Dr. Juan Andrade, Jr. The topic for his presentation was "The Global Implications of Latino Population Growth and the Search for Common Ground." The theme for the event was "Common Ground."
The conference was organized through the Office of the Provost and International Programs, the Provost' International Speaker Series and the Center for Latino Studies and Engagement (CLASE). The program hosted by OSU was conducted under the leadership and direction of Dr. Sabah Randhawa, Provost, Dr. Sandra Rivera-Mills, Director, Center for Latino Studies and Engagement, and Ms. Maria Chavez-Haroldson, Associate Director of Outreach and Engagement, Center for Latino Studies and Engagement.
USHLI's participation was an extension of the Student Leadership Series. This was our 36th SLS event of 2012, bringing the total number of students, parents, and professionals served to 42,908 in 19 states. The next stops for the Student Leadership Series are Providence, RI (10/22-23), the Bronx, NY(10/24-26), Chicago, IL (11/2-3) and Hammond, IN (11/7-9).
