USHLI Student Leadership Series in NJ
Over 1,000 students, parents, and educators attended our Student Leadership Series events in New Jersey held at Perth Amboy High SchoolSamuel Shull Middle School and Park Elementary School.  The tour was organized by Dr. Ivonne Diaz-Claisse, Executive Director of HISPA.

The events included featured presentations by Joaquin Zihuatanejo from Dallas, TX and Mena Badros from New York, NY.  Joaquin is the World Poetry Slam Competition Champion, where he competed against national champions representing 17 nations worldwide.  Joaquin's presentations are a unique combination of humor and poetry, which resonate incredibly well with students of all ages.  Mena's high-energy, engaging and powerful presentations encourage students to find their purpose in life and inspire them to fulfill it.

The focus of this series of events was to encourage and motivate students to stay in school, improve their academic performance, graduate, and to pursue some kind of post-secondary education or training.

This was our 35th SLS event of 2012, bringing the total number of students, parents, and professionals served to 42,693 in 19 states.  The next stops for the Student Leadership Series are Providence, RI (10/22-23), the Bronx, NY (10/24-26) and Hammond, IN (11/7-9).

The primary goal of the Student Leadership Series is to ensure that every Latino family has a student that is one of the following: the 1st student to graduate high school; the 1st student to enroll in post-secondary education or training; the 1st student to graduate post-secondary education or training. The USHLI 2012 Student Leadership Series officially launched February 16th and consists of Stay-in-School Rallies for middle school and junior high students, Career & College Recruitment Fairs for high school students, Regional Leadership Summits for college students, and, whenever possible, Parent Leadership Training and Professional Development events.
