This week's Torah portion, Yitro, contains a valuable lesson in taking care of oneself.   • Purim- Etz Chaim is the Purim capital of North America! On Sunday, February 24th the service will begin at 10:00 AM followed by the carnival and lunch led by our Youth Groups. Don't forget to come in costume and bring your mac 'n cheese groggers. Read more here.
  • Congregational Seder- This year's Congregational seder will be held on Tuesday evening March 26th at 6:00 PM. Everyone is invited to attend our communal celebration of this special holiday. Read more here.

This coming Sunday, the upper school at Etz Chaim will be having a family program focused on the question "What Makes Me a Jew?" As I was thinking about Sunday's upcoming program, I went back to an essay I first read several years ago, entitled "Judaism and the Love of Reason," written by Martha Nussbaum, one of the great philosophers living and writing today.   • Sisterhood/Brotherhood Shabbat Dinner-Please join us for the Sisterhood/Brotherhood Sponsored Shabbat dinner and service
    THIS Friday, February 1st. Dinner begins at 6:30 PM, followed by 8:15 PM Shabbat service led by members of the Sisterhood and Brotherhood. Click here for registration form.
  • Adult B'nai Mitzvah Class- This 6 month class, taught by Rabbi Cosnowsky, culminates in having an Adult B'nai Mitzvah on July 20, 2013. Read more here.
  • Faces of Judaism Illuminated- On Monday, February 11th Rabbi Carl  Wolkin of Temple Beth Shalom in Northbrook, will present Conservative Judaism, Part III of the four part series. Read more here.

  • Sophie & Jack Edwards Scholar-In-Residence- On March 8th-10th the Sophie & Jack Edwards Scholar-In-Residence weekend features renowned rabbi, professor and author Burton Visotzky. He will speak on the theme Us and Them- relations between Jews and the other Abrahamic religions through the ages. Read more here.

  • Shabbat Chaverim- Our next Shabbat Chaverim will be Friday morning, February 11th at 10:00 AM. This program is for young children and a parent/guardian. Read more here.  
  • Snow Day School Closing Information-
    • If we need to close for some unforeseen reason, not due to bad weather, we will contact you via phone. If we need to cancel school because of bad weather we will do three things. Send an email blast by 7:30 AM on a Sunday and by 2:00 PM on a Wednesday.
    • Post it on the home page of our Etz Chaim webpage.
    • Post it on the Etz Chaim facebook page.
Congregational Life
  • Puttin' on the Ritz- THIS Saturday, February 2nd 7:30 PM, Congregation Etz Chaim of DuPage County will hold its second Puttin' On The Ritz Gala, a fun evening of gaming, music, dancing and prizes. This fabulous fundraiser is presented by: Ways & Means Committee & The Brotherhood. The evening will include: Gaming - this year more tables and dealers; Music - Chi-Town Showstoppers return; Bar - yes, bartenders can be bribed with Hugs & Kisses; Appetizer Buffet - a feast of flavors and tastes; Premium Raffle - spend your tickets for fabulous prizes; Silent Auction - Live auction a week in Maui, a week at Union Pier Michigan  an iPad mini and lots more!!!!                                         Puttin' on the Ritz 2013 - Saturday, February 2nd at 7:30 PM.

  • Interfaith Power & Light- Our solar panels have been up and running for over a year. Read here how we have been recognized for installing these panels.
  • Publicity- Does your committee have an upcoming event for members only?  Does your committee have an event for the public to participate also?  If  you need some publicity outside of the congregation walls, then please contact our Publicity Chairwoman Rachelle Stoller so she can include your upcoming event to the public.  She has contacts at many Chicagoland publications and the free press is great for your event and the synagogue!  A lot of lead time is helpful because the publications often need many months notice to include our publicity.
  • Temple B'nai Israel, Aurora presents Dr. Gerhon Baskin on Sunday, February 17th from 4:00 - 5:30 PM. He is an Israeli peace activist who was instumental in negotiating the release of Galid Shalit after 5 years of captivity by Hamam. There is no cost for this program.
  • OSRUI Special Programs- OSRUI is offering various programs year round. Read more here.
