Bobcat Tracks - May/June 2016
Connecting our Community
Letter from our PFC President
Dear Bobcat Families,

The end of the school year is nigh.  We know this not just because of the thrashed school shoes and backpack zippers that have stopped working, and not just because of all the requests for help at end-of-year things, but because when we look back at pictures of our kids from September and we think of all they've learned, we realize how far they have come.

So it's a time for giving thanks.  First of all, thank you to Mrs. Schuler and all the teachers and staff at Bancroft.  These adults are the heart and soul of our school and are what make this place as special as it is.  Thank you to this year's PFC Board: Jenn Boswell, Emerald Bristol, Julie Fustok, Matt Gould, Marga Marshall, Hillary Osness, Cherisse Riney, Sandi Rosenblatt, and Anna Rowe.  We'd also like to thank: the fundraising team for putting on the auction, mathletics, walk-a-thon, dine to donate, and organizing dollar-a-day, boxtops, labels for education, and scrip; the education team for facilitating art, PEP, science, harvest of the month and after school enrichment; the communications team for keeping us informed via tracks, blasts, room parents and on our website, and our buddies for welcoming new families to our community; the events team for organizing book fairs, hospitality, fall fest, family nights, volunteer day, 5th grade promotion, and yearbook; the operations team for arranging all the traffic volunteers, making sure our disaster preparedness is up to date, ordering spirit wear and birthday books, keeping us in the loop on PEAK, and organizing volunteers for the library and the school; and the financial team for auditing our books and depositing our checks.  Without the work of the PFC and the $175,000 that we raise every year, this school would be an entirely different place.

Thank you also to those who stepped up in other ways - through the School Site Counsel, ELAC, as room parents, or volunteering in the classroom and around the school. Every little bit that every individual person does helps to make Bancroft better.

This is also a time for giving thanks to those who have stepped up to roles for next year!  I will stay in my President role, Hillary Osness will take on Vice President, Marga Marshall will be our Parliamentarian, Matt Gould will be VP Strategic Funds, and Anna Rowe will continue as Recording Secretary.  We are still looking for a Treasurer (though we do now have an Assistant Treasurer - thank you Preetha Sivalingam!).  We also have many of our Chair and Coordinator positions filled but are still looking for a few more fabulous people!  Please see the next article for ways you might be able to help.  I know there is also a vacancy on the School Site Counsel, so please look for that notice at some point as well.

And then.  Happy Summer-ing!!!  We made it!!

PFC Roles - Spotlight on PEAK Rep
Thank you to all of you who have stepped up to many important roles!  To see where we are and what we still need, please download the word document here.

Amy Anderson has been our PEAK Rep for the last two years, but we have convinced her to take on our Communications Chair position (thank you Amy!). This leaves a vacancy in this really interesting position.  Please connect with Amy Anderson or Mari Mielcarski if you have questions about what this is or if it might be a good fit for you.

Partners For Educational Achievement (PEAK) Rep
Time Commitment: 2 hours per month

PEAK is a non-profit education foundation, dedicated to preserving and enriching students' learning experiences in the six Walnut Creek schools that are in MDUSD, including Bancroft. PEAK's goal is to help buffer the deep cuts in government funding. PEAK seeks to enrich our students' educational experiences both through direct project funding and through inspiring partnerships with local government and businesses for the enduring benefit of our community.

The PEAK Rep is the Bancroft Representative to Partners For Educational Achievement ( Responsibilities include: attend monthly meeting; type meeting minutes and submit on the PFC website and/or verbally report back information from the meetings at the PFC meetings; and, optionally, volunteer at different community events such as the Turkey Trot or Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce meetings.
The PEAK Rep reports to, and gets support from, the Community Development Chair.

Budget Report
With one month left in our fiscal year, Bancroft Elementary PFC is pleased to report a successful year.  We will slightly exceed our $174.3k fundraising budget, thanks largely to your contributions to Dollar-A-Day, Excellence in Education, Spring Auction, Walk-a-thon, Mathletics and Employer Matching Funds contributions.  Employer Matching Funds contributions are gaining popularity among mid-to-large corporations and the PFC will exceed budget by $4k in this key fundraising line as more Bancroft parents are matching Dollar-A-Day and other donations with employer contributions.
PFC funded over $100k in Instructional Assistant, Site Tech and Counselor hours this year to support our students' academic and personal growth. PFC also funded $60k in Bancroft's investment in technology through the purchase and implementation of Chromebooks for the upper grades.  Your PFC contributions also went to fund Art Appreciation, Harvest of the Month, Science Lab, Music education, Walk-through Programs (4th & 5th), Soul Shoppe, playground supplies and more.

As we look forward to next year, we want thank all of you for your contributions this year and encourage you to get involved in your Parent Faculty Club to help make our children's experience at Bancroft the best it can be.

Bancroft Rock Stars!

The Bancroft Rock Stars are a group of Bobcat students in grades first through third that love to sing!  They meet with Ms. Sajjad and her guitar after school to sing songs they enjoy.  The spring session concluded with a performance at Pinky's Pizza Parlor on Saturday afternoon, May 7th.  This was the group's second performance at Pinky's.  The patio was again filled to capacity by proud family, friends and teachers!

In this show, the audience was treated to 3 solo performances.  Amelie Ives sang solo during the song Counting Stars, Jacob Reyes sang solo during Journey's classic song Don't Stop Believing, and lastly Marcel Azizi rapped on the song Airplanes.  The entire class did an incredible job as they sang their hearts out with confidence and poise.

We would like to thank Ms. Sajjad for creating and leading this amazing program.  Thank you to her fiancé Gerry who accompanied the class on bass guitar each week and also handled the sound system.  And thank you to teachers Ms. Hagen, Ms. Parker and Ms. Purcell for their help and support and for giving the students feedback on songs.

As Ms. Sajjad says, "Music is one of my passions and I wish I would have had a program like this as an outlet for myself when I was a kid.  It helps kids increase their confidence, and allows them to feel seen and heard.  Hopefully a program like this will also allow kids to find their passions early on in life!"  As a parent, I'm so grateful to have this program here at Bancroft.  Thank you again Ms. Sajjad, you rock!!

Thank you Bancroft families and friends for making our first year of Mathletics such a success!

We are proud to announce that we raised $13,500 for our children. The best part is that the kids had fun doing it. A big thank you to Mrs. Schuler, the office staff, and the teachers for all of their hard work. Thank you to Hillary, Tatyana, Cherisse, Patricia, Mari, and Thien for your prep work, and all of the parents that helped out the day of the event. Your efforts make a difference.
