Letter from our PFC President
Welcome back to all returning families and a special greeting to our newfamilies!  My name is Lisa Guarnaccia.  I have boys in 2nd and 4th grade, and I have been actively involved in the Bancroft community and in the PFC (Parent Faculty Club) in various roles over the past four years.  I am excited for the start of the school year and for all the great things we have planned!
During Back to School Night on August 28th, from 6:30-7, in between the classroom presentations for the lower and upper grades, the PFC will be hosting a short session to introduce this year's Board and our plans for the year ahead.  We are looking forward to meeting with the community in this format this year.

I would like to thank you in advance for your support.  Should you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please do not hesitate to email me.

Warm Regards,
Lisa Guarnaccia
Dollar-A-Day Campaign
The Dollar-A-Day Campaign is the PFC's biggest and most important source of funds used to bridge the gap between public funding and what we, as a community, choose to provide for our children.

The PFC has budgeted over $150,000 this year to augment our children's educational experience.  You can see the breakdown of these funds on our website.  40% of those funds comes from the Dollar-A-Day Campaign.  These dollars enable our children to have Instructional and Language Development Assistants at every grade level, science, art and garden classes, a Librarian for all grades and extended open library times, a technology Site-Tech to assist our teachers with 21st century technology learning capabilities, and more! Your support of this campaign makes these programs possible.

The recommended donation for the 2014-15 school year is $365 per family. Our goal this year is 100% participation by Bancroft families. We know every family situation is different, and we encourage every family to participate regardless of the dollar amount. No amount is too small and will make a difference!

Dollar-A-Day donation forms are included in your Info Days packet or can be downloaded from the PFC website.  Please complete the Donation Form and return it at Info Days on August 20/21.  Families who donate to the Dollar-A-Day campaign will be appreciated in our monthly Bobcat Tracks newsletter and all donations of $365 or more will receive a D-A-D "Paw Print" car magnet.

Thank you for your participation!

Curriculum Spotlight
Soul Shoppe
Through funding from the PFC, all Bancroft students will experience the Soul Shoppe Elementary Peace Program.  It is a year-round program that supports our community in communicating, resolving conflicts, and in being safe, fun and bully-free.

As a new program to Bancroft, it will begin with professional development training for all staff.  All students will attend the Tools of the Heart Assembly.  Bancroft will have two Peace Paths painted on our grounds for students to walk through the process of conflict resolution communication.  Grade-level workshops on Respect are also planned.  And selected students in grades 3-5 will have the opportunity for training in the Peacemaker Program.
Shop at Sports Basement - Help Us Win $2,000
Whenever you shop at Sports Basement, at check out, tell them you're with Bancroft. You will get 10% off and Bancroft will get 5% back -- all day, every day!

Plus, Sports Basement is kicking off the school year with a Back to School Challenge! The school with the highest percentage of families shopping at SB before September 15th wins $2,000 in Basement Bucks. Details can be found here.

Harvest of the Month
After a successful first year, Bancroft will once again be putting on the Harvest of the Month program for our students. We will have several
lessons where we will be introducing a new fruit or vegetable to the kids. Our goal is to increase their awareness of the importance of healthy eating and how what they eat affects their bodies.

This is a parent-run program, so each classroom will need some volunteers to help conduct the lessons. Watch for opportunities to get involved once school starts!

After School Enrichment

After school enrichment classes will start the week of September 15th. We have 12 great classes, including a new Irish dancing class. Flyers will be sent home with your child in early September.

Position and years at Bancroft I am the Principal and this will be my ninth year.

How did you come to Bancroft? It was definitely a drawing of the heart.  The Principal had resigned mid-year and I had already felt a real connection with the community at Bancroft (I was then a Principal at a school in Clayton). So when I was asked to step in, it was a quick yes.

What do you most enjoy about Bancroft? Definitely the children, families, and staff.  There's a real sense of community, respect, and belonging; people get each other even when they disagree.  I love being able to contribute, enhance, and promote that sort of community.

What is your mission as a Principal? To treat people well.

Why are you in education? I knew as a six year old in my first grade classroom that I could do it better than my teacher was.  She was mistreating people and that inspired me to do it better.  I also noticed how just one way of teaching didn't work for everyone.  I wanted to use creativity to open doors for all children.

What makes your job challenging? Not enough hours in the day!

What profession, other than being a teacher, could you also see yourself doing? A talk show host! It would be so fun to get to know people that way and be able to share their stories.

What are your hobbies and interests? Spending time with my grown children and their children, small trips, quiet afternoons, shopping, reading, theatre, trying new restaurants.

What was the last good book you read? The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin about the wife of Charles Lindbergh.

Who has been the largest influence on your life? My parents because they were very encouraging, tolerant, and understanding. They had room for other viewpoints.  My husband too - I am inspired by his generosity.

Do you have a favorite quote? "While parents possess the original key to their offspring's experience, teachers have a spare key. They, too, can open or close the minds and hearts of children." - Haim G. Ginott
