Hurricane Sandy Makes Landfall: Day 1 Relief

Just 24 hours have passed since Hurricane Sandy began to make landfall across the East coast of the United States and already the State emergency management agencies and relief communities are working diligently with first responders to rescue and shelter the millions impacted by the storm. We extend our thoughts and prayers to all those suffering through this crisis.

Aidmatrix is focused on doing what we know best: building supply chains for humanitarian relief. We stand side by side with our partners as the situation is assessed, needs are identified, and the public is engaged in helping. The National Donations Management Network(www.ndmn.us) is active and running in all of the impacted States to help in this effort. But remember, relief organizations can best use financial donations first, as they are the most flexible gifts to instantly apply directly to the response efforts.

Communications are still intermittent, power outages are still widespread, but below are the updates from Day 1 of the relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy.

Aidmatrix and Microsoft Working to Match Needs for Hurricane Sandy

Aidmatrix is responding to Hurricane Sandy in partnership with the State offices of Emergency Management and the State VOADs (voluntary organizations active in disaster) who are currently assessing the situation. In support of this effort, we are working  with Microsoft's Disaster Response team to help get the word out on what is needed in the region.

As needs are relayed through the National Donations Management Network (www.ndmn.us) ,of which each State impacted is a member, those needs and stories from the ground are then passed and published through Microsoft's online properties to reach even more potential donors.

American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) Stands Ready to Help Match Needs for Hurricane Sandy

ALAN (www.alanaid.org) has been a long-time partner of Aidmatrix and of disaster responders. They represent many businesses in the logistics community that stand ready to help during times of disaster. ALAN is taking steps to help communicate the needs coming from the relief community in the States impacted by Hurricane Sandy. As the States' emergency management agencies enter their needs into the National Donations Management Network (www.NDMN.us) ALAN then helps make them visible to their community for the sole purpose of finding matching donors to get the job done. It is a powerful example of the public-private partnership that puts the needs of those impacted by disaster, first.

Food Banks up and down the East Coast are preparing for the worst. While they play a daily critical role in feeding millions of hungry Americans, during times of disaster they are often thrust into the role of first-responders. Their physical warehouses are centrally located and have the existing infrastructure to quickly convert into distribution centers for disaster relief. They provide direct service to their regular local hunger agencies and many more relief organizations mobilized by the disaster. The demand for their services becomes even greater as whole communities can become displaced or moved into temporary shelters during times of disaster.

One might not often think of a food bank as being on the front lines of disaster relief, but without them, communities would suffer. These are no ad-hoc operations. Feeding America and the Food Banks run highly sophisticated supply-chains that network all the Feeding America Food Banks across the country, along with manufacturers and relief organizations, all with a little help from their friends at Aidmatrix. Their investment in technology enables them to tell instantly what they have in inventory, what is in route, and what they need to procure to scale up for the increased demands of an impending disaster like Hurricane Sandy. They participate in daily auctions for food donated by the country's biggest manufacturers and hunger relief providers - all done in real-time, online on Aidmatrix SCM4Hunger™ platform. You might just be amazed at the operations that go on behind the scenes to secure the health and welfare of a community by a local Feeding America Food Bank.

As a founding partner for the National Donations ManaUPS Logogement Network (NDMN), UPS continues to help in disaster relief. UPS is an active member of the NDMN providing donated and discounte d transportation services for in-kind donations made through the NDMN to the States impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Once a donation offer is accepted, the States and relief organizations can coordinate directly with UPS through the NDMN to arrange transportation of the donated goods.

UPS is a socially-responsible corporate partner that values philanthropic investment in leading-edge technologies to directly benefit the humanitarian relief community. Our relationship with UPS and the UPS Foundation began in 2007 when we came together with FEMA (The United States' Federal Emergency Management Agency) and Accenture to build and launch the National Donations Management System, the first of its kind in the U.S., that interconnects government, relief organizations and businesses during times of disaster. They are also the founding member of the International Transportation Program which helps secure donated and discounted transportation for relief organizations around the world.
