Message from the President
Stephen D. McGraw |
One of the important roles of a local bar association is to foster a strong relationship between members of the bench and bar. In this issue of the BarNews, we highlight a long-standing member of the Wayne County bench who is moving into a new leadership role.
Judge Robert J. Colombo, Jr. was appointed Chief Judge of the Third Judicial Circuit Court of Michigan on October 18, 2013 by the Michigan Supreme Court for a two-year term beginning January 1, 2014. A circuit court judge since 1982, Judge Colombo accepted a number of special assignments during his tenure, including serving as the asbestos judge for Wayne County and being appointed by the Michigan Supreme Court to handle all breast implant cases in the State of Michigan and all class action lawsuits brought under the Michigan Anti-Trust Law against Microsoft.
Beyond being a well-respected circuit court judge, Chief Judge Colombo has been a good friend of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association and has supported its activities in a variety of ways, in addition to regularly attending its events. He graciously agreed to answer a number of questions that were put to him regarding his appointment and role as Chief Judge of the Third Judicial Circuit Court of Michigan, and you can find his responses here.

Making a Difference: School Partnership Program "Budding Barristers Day", Mock Interviews at University of Detroit Mercy, Gleaners Food Bank with WLAM Wayne |
Whether helping lawyers of the future reach their goals or making life a little better for our hungry neighbors, the Barristers Section continues to lead the way in the DMBA's community service efforts. How can we have the biggest impact? By having you join us! So mark your calendars now and contact the Barristers Board members indicated below to get involved.
School Partnership Program "Budding Barristers Day"
February 8, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (lunch will be provided)
Cobo Hall, Detroit
This year's School Partnership Program is poised to be one of the most rewarding ever, working with students in the Detroit Public Schools and beyond to foster their interest in the law and their own career development. The centerpiece of this year's program will be "Budding Barristers Day," a single day on which students and area attorneys will come together to participate in workshops on essay writing, resume writing and interview skills.
In addition to receiving career and education advice, Budding Barristers Day will allow participating students to meet with attorney mentors and brainstorm for their essay contest entries (students and mentors will receive the topic in advance; past topics have dealt with current legal issues that students may see in their own lives - such as free speech in public schools). After the event, attorneys will stay in touch with their student mentees to help them finish their essays, which the students will submit as part of the program's essay contest.
These students need your help! We need volunteers to serve as essay mentors and to assist with the job interview portion of the program (ideally, both!). If you can spare half of a Saturday to share with area "budding barristers," please click here to share some information about your availability and interests. You can also contact either School Partnership Program Co-Chair: Kim Yourchock at kimberly.yourchock@jacksonlewis.com or Tiffany Ellis at tellis@sommerspc.com with any questions.
Mock Interviews at University of Detroit Mercy
February 11 - 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. OR 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. (based on your schedule)
Remember your first time interviewing for an internship, summer associate position, or post-graduation job? Would practice and constructive feedback have helped calm the inevitable nerves? That's the idea behind the Barristers Section's Mock Interview event at UDM Law School! Join us for one (or both) of our two timeslots to serve as interviewers for students working to build their confidence, interview skills and poise. If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information please contact DMBA Barrister Board member Stacy Johnson at saj@ksklaw.com or 313-967-0700.
Gleaners Community Food Bank Volunteer Day
March 22nd, 12:45 - 4:00 p.m.
Gleaners Community Food Bank, Detroit
For the second consecutive year, the Barristers Section Charitable Committee is partnering with the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, Wayne Chapter for a volunteer event at Gleaners Community Food Bank. We will be sorting and packing donated food in preparation for delivery to the more than 500 partner agencies that Gleaners supports throughout Southeast Michigan.
If you'd like to help us fill boxes, stomachs and hearts in our communities (or if you have any questions), contact Daniel Phillips at dphillips@dickinson-wright.com.

Recent Event: 2013 "Jingle Mingle" Holiday Celebration |
November 21st may have seemed a bit early compared to more typical holiday celebrations (and the weather wasn't exactly full of cheer!), but that didn't stop nearly 100 DMBA members and guests from welcoming in the holidays at SkyBar in downtown Detroit.
The impending rain storm was no obstacle as professionals from throughout metro-Detroit came together to kick-off the season of celebration, including Patrick McLain (Kerr Russell) and Bruce Vande Vusse (Foster Swift Collins and Smith).
James Masouras, Melissa Stewart (Stewart Law), Laura Walesch and DMBA President-Elect David Winter (both of Winter & Walesch) paused for one last picture before heading out for the evening.

Recent Event: Drink'n'Learn: Handling Political Hot Potatoes |
The first event of 2014, the January 9 Drink 'n' Learn session, "Handling Political Hot Potatoes" provided plenty of opportunity to pick up practical pointers and make new connections. Co-presented by the Wolverine Bar Association and held at the Firebird Tavern, the evening was a great way to start the new year.
Dealing with the media, preparing your client, and making the most of unexpected challenges/opportunities were among the topics addressed by speakers Tom Bruetsch (Bodman - far left) and Herb Sanders (The Sanders Law Firm - far right) as they shared some of their best tips for handling high-visibility cases.
Here, Bruetsch and Sanders are joined by planning committee member Daimeon Cotton (Williams Acosta) and WBA President Ronda Tate (Lewis & Munday).
Following the presentation and discussion, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to recap holiday happenings and share in the excitement of the new year. Among those catching up were Shanta McMullan (Butzel), Kimberly Yourchock (Jackson Lewis), Anne-Marie Welch (Clark Hill) and Tiffany Ellis (Sommers Schwartz).

Mentors & Sponsors: Do You Need Advice or Action? | "When asked for a show of hands by those who had sponsors, about 15 of 200 lawyers present raised their hands. When asked how many of those sponsors were powerful people who could help get them promotions, raises or high visibility assignments, most of the hands went down. I conducted this exercise at a recent retreat for the Women Lawyers of Utah to emphasize the difference between sponsors and mentors and how landing sponsors, not just mentors, can more quickly advance your career." Would a mentor or a sponsor better support your career path at this moment? Click here to read the rest of this edition's "Practice Tips," provided by Elizabeth Jolliffe of Your Benchmark Coach. You can also contact Elizabeth at elizabeth@yourbenchmarkcoach.com for more information, including details an upcoming luncheon event on the topic. |
