What are the impacts?
When OSHA released 1926 Subpart CC, they required construction riggers and signal persons to be "qualified" by Nov 2010 and crane operators be "certified" by Nov 2014.However, the language surrounding certification raised concern with industry stakeholders, and OSHA extended the deadline for operator certification by years.

As it stands today, operators are required to be qualified, but by November 10, 2017, all construction crane operators must be certified. So what was the controversy about? What do you need to do to reach compliance? How will it impact jobsite safety?

As the industry prepares for a final ruling by OSHA, Bo had the opportunity to share his thoughts in this guest post of Construction Business Owners magazine.

Featured Training
Federal OSHA construction standard requires all persons providing crane signals or attaching loads to hooks to meet qualification requirements. Crane Tech's programs provide training and testing required to become compliant with the regulation.
This Train-the-Trainer course provides instruction to ensure operators are fully aware of the hazards associated with telescopic and vertical mast forklifts. Our TTT programs offer a turn-key solution that allows trainers to bring their new-found knowledge and Crane Tech's proprietary materials back to train others at their workplace.
Qualified Rigger Level 2
Our Qualified Rigger Level 2 program provides the training necessary for an employer to designate a person as qualified to work as a Level 2 rigger. Level 2 riggers are trained to perform rigging calculations, determine the correct slings and rigging gear for safe load handling and to direct a Level 1 rigger.
These courses are also available as Train-the-Trainer courses.

Crane Tech Tip of the Week

Make sure you are calculating the clearance for fall arrest systems correctly.

If you are using a 6-ft. shock absorbing lanyard and are working from less than an 18' 6" elevation you are at risk of hitting the ground if you were to fall. Crane Tech's policy regarding boom lifts and limited heights is to use the retractable lanyard type.

Does your employer have a periodic rigging inspection program, and is it followed?

You never know just where we are going to end up and what we will be doing when we get there. One instructor has had the pleasure of visiting Cedar Rapids, Iowa for 2 weeks working onsite to provide hands-on pile driving training for a new rail road bridge. Check out the mini-video from pictures on our Facebook page.

Remember that Crane Tech offers 50% off any refresher training within 24 months of completing a Crane Tech program or a competitor's program of similar length. Documentation of such must be submitted prior to attendance.
