Leveling the Field to 1%
A common question we get asked is how to meet a crane manufacturer's requirements for a level crane. OSHA and ASME both state that a crane must be level to within 1-percent of level grade.  But, what does this mean and how do you accomplish this?
  • Is there a difference if the crane uses outriggers or crawlers?
  • How level must the ground be where the outrigger floats are positioned?
  • Why is it important to maintain a 1-percent level grade?
  • What type of level do I use to measure?
  • How do I check if the crane is level?
  • How often do I need to check  the level?
This week's Hooked On Crane Tech Blog we talk about how to be a 1-percenter.

Crane Tech Tip of the Week

When performing a pick and carry operation with a rough terrain crane, make sure the house lock pin is engaged to ensure that the boom is centered directly over the front of the crane.

If load control is a concern appoint a spotter with a non conductive tagline. Travel very slowly and make sure the ground is level enough for the lift. If out of level ground is encountered, set the load down and travel past the out of level ground, set up on outriggers and move the load past the obstruction to level ground. If level ground is still not available, repeat the operation until level ground is reached (stepping).
