Setting Up for Success
For many years, there were only two positions where mobile crane outriggers
could be used
for applications of crane ratings:
  1. All outriggers fully deployed and set
  2. Outriggers not deployed or set.
However, modern cranes have changed dramatically and this includes how their outriggers can be configured. Now, many cranes offer multiple options for setting outriggers, but this doesn't mean they can be set any which way fits the site best.

Check out this week's Hooked On Crane Tech Blog, and find out why following the manufacturer's instructions for setting outriggers can mean the difference between a safe lift and a sideways lift.

Crane Tech Tip of the Week

Do not attempt to lift a load that has been frozen to the ground or any other object.

Doing so may create a shock load or sudden release of tension and can cause many issues, including a condition known as a bird cage.  A bird cage occurs when the rope runs out of length to dissipate the dynamics of recoiling energy.

Wire rope that shows evidence of a bird cage should be immediately removed from service, as the structural integrity of the rope has been compromised and is no longer safe to use for lifting.
