What Does OSHA Say?
It would not be safe to operate a crane that didn't have reserve stability. That would be like asking a rigger to hoist 2,000 pounds with a sling that is known to have a breaking strength of 2,000 pounds. Therefore the crane industry developed a suitable "margin of stability" that could be applied to all cranes that have tipping limits.

This week we will look at the standards for margin of stability and what OSHA says must be followed to ensure crane operations remain safe and stable.

What Our Clients Say

They say, a picture is worth a thousand words...so here is the picture from last week's pedestal crane class from CF Industries in Donaldsonville, Louisiana.

Thanks to Ron for sending the image and for the creative picture angle.

Crane Tech Tip of the Week

In construction and in many other industry applications, hooks are required to have safety latches. If the latch is missing or damaged and needs to be replaced, it should be purchased from the manufacturer. Make sure to order the right type and size.

The hook pictured here needs the positive locking latch kit which has a slot in the center and a cotter pin. The standard latch kit would not fit this hook correctly.
