Getting in the Hot Seat

How Mobile Crane Operators are Made

Becoming a mobile crane operator requires more than just a one-week classroom course on load charts and the dynamics of crane operation. It requires time in the seat--applying book education with a hands-on experience--to move beyond theory and truly learn how these powerful machines work and move under a load.

It's for this reason, Crane Tech created a class to turn individuals with limited to no experience into NCCCO Certified Mobile Crane Operators. Our Professional Operator Development program, combines classroom teaching with hands-on application to create skilled operators who not only understand what's necessary for safe and efficient crane operation, but know how to apply it on the job site as well.

Crane Tech's Professional Operator

Development Program is conducted

at our Tampa Training Center and includes:

  • Week 1: Classroom instruction on mobile crane operation including Qualified Rigger Level 1 training and testing to meet OSHA §1926 Subpart CC requirements.
  • Week 2: Intensive hands-on training to master load control and prepare for the NCCCO practical exams. Also includes more technical training for load charts, range diagrams, crane
set-up, lift planning, hydraulic systems, wire rope inspection, regulations, and pre-operational inspection.
  • Week 3: NCCCO Certification written test preparation and written/practical testing.
Due to the intensive nature of
this course, class size
is limited and classes sell
out quickly. Remaining opportunities for 2015 include:

July 6 - 24
October 5 - 23
November 30 -  December 18

To register or for more information, visit the Professional Operator Development page or call and speak with our Scheduled Training Director at 800.521.7669.

We have been educating crane operators on the importance of safe and reliable operation since 1977. As a result, Safety through Education is more than our tagline, it is our guiding principle!

What Our Students Say...

"I just want to say thank you so much for all you done for me. You went above and beyond to ensure that we had the knowledge to succeed. Even going as far as staying late on days when the weather didn't cooperate. Thanks to the Crane Tech team I am now operating a 765e-2 RT Grove and supporting my family by doing something I've always wanted to do."

OSHA Compliance

Riggers and Signal Persons

OSHA §1926 Subpart CC requires employers to have documentation that riggers working in and around hoisting activities to be qualified--meaning the person must have the ability and education to properly rig the load for a particular job. For those working as signal persons, they must be qualified through training, knowledge and experience with the documentation to prove it.

Crane Tech offers training programs and documentation to help employers satisfy OSHA requirements--qualifying employees through training with practical and/or written testing.

Crane Tech's Qualified Rigger Level 1 program provides training necessary to meet the regulations as a basic level rigger. Instruction includes use of slings, rigging hardware, hooks, use of below-the-hook lifting devices, pre-use inspections, center of gravity, and more.  Click to register. Click to register for Train-the-Trainer.

This program teaches the basics of working as a signal person, including when signals are required, types of signals used and the proper methods, the basic understanding of crane dynamics and more. Click to register. Click to register for Train-the-Trainer.

Qualified Rigger Level 2  - June 17-18 in Houston

Provides the training necessary for an employer to designate a person as qualified to work as a Level 2 rigger.  Level 2 riggers are trained to perform rigging calculations, determine the correct slings and rigging gear for safe load handling and to direct a Level 1 rigger. Click to register.

You Still Have Time to Win!

We are receiving great newsletter name suggestions. Some are serious, some are uplifting (pun intended), others are witty, but regardless we could use more of them!

Send your Crane Tech newsletter naming ideas (good or bad, funny or serious) to Katie via email or comment on our FaceBook page, Linked In page, or call.

The winner gets the honor of naming the newsletter, a $250 scholarship towards a Crane Tech class, and an awesome prize pack of Crane Tech goodies!

We will be collecting suggested names through next week and start the voting process in mid June!

Crane Tech Tip of the Week

When setting up equipment that uses outriggers make sure that the outrigger jacks are set on level ground, also use blocking or cribbing to help spread the bearing pressure to a larger area.

It's important to note that a working crane can place as much as 100% of the total crane and load weight on any one outrigger.
