How and when does an overhead crane operator
test the hoist brakes?

Federal regulation OSHA 29CFR1910.179(n)(3)(vii) states:

"The operator shall test the brakes each time a load approaching the rated load is handled. The brakes shall be tested by raising the load a few inches and applying the brakes."

This training includes detailed presentations on each of the subjects of safe operation, pre-use inspection, capacity interpretation, equipment characteristics, rigging loads, signaling, operating procedures and techniques and Federal compliance. Training includes classroom and hands-on training exercises to ensure program materials are adequately learned.

This training is accomplished in accordance with applicable regulations, standards, manufacturers requirements and recommendations, and accepted safe hoisting practices
    

 



Students will be able to: 
  • Demonstrate the safe operation of overhead cranes
  • Explain how overhead cranes operate
  • Identify safety concerns associated with overhead cranes
  • Demonstrate how to properly rig various loads for lifting
  • Demonstrate how to perform daily pre-use inspections for overhead cranes and rigging
  • Demonstrate the designated hands signals for overhead crane operations
  • Provide overhead crane operator training and testing.

Federal OSHA �1926 Subpart CC requires all persons providing crane signals meet qualification requirements in accordance with the standard. Crane Tech's Qualified Signal Person program provides the training and testing required by the regulation.

All students will:

  • Know and understand when signals are required.
  • Know and understand the type of signals used.
  • Know and understand the proper method for signal communication by hand and by voice.
  • Be competent in the application of the type of signals used.
  • Have a basic understanding of equipment operation and limitations, including the crane dynamics.
  • Demonstrate the requirements to give signals through an oral or written test and though a practical test.

Qualified Rigger Level 1 Train-the-Trainer 

Federal OSHA �1926 construction standard requires all riggers to be qualified.  Crane Tech's Qualified Rigger Level 1 program provides training necessary to meet the regulations as a basic level rigger. Program also satisfies API requirements.   

 

All students will know and understand:

  • The proper identification and use of various sling types
  • The proper identification and use of various rigging hardware and hooks.
  • The proper identification and use of below-the-hook lifting devices.
  • Pre-use inspection and removal criteria
  • The selection of correct slings and rigging hardware
  • The effects of sling angle tensions
  • The various sling hitches and how to apply them
  • Load balance and center of gravity.
