Practice:
"Gift of Beauty"
Create two small similar images of something beautiful from nature. Make a quick pencil outline, take a photograph, put a splash of green paint beneath blue paint on a landscape oriented paper, or tie up a bunch of dried grasses with pretty ribbon...Keep one for yourself and give away the other one.

Greetings!
As we move more deeply into summer, Northern Hemispherians, let us embrace (quite literally) the gifts of the season.
On a regular basis, I find treasures in the pockets of my jackets, pants, or in my hiking pack...Upon return home I am usually too weary to remember to check all my gear. So, some time later, I get the great gift of finding a small pebble, dried leaf or flower, moss and lichen, shell, seedpod, twig, feather, bark, insect, bone. Once, I even found a tiny bird nest in the refuge of an inside coat pocket days after I had hiked a beautiful trail. These are gifts of beauty.
They are also gifts of story: a memory in the natural world that takes off into reverie in our story-loving imagination. The focus for this newsletter is "Capturing Moments"; we gather and create keepsakes that we can use to deepen our inner experience of our own lives that we may then turn in wholeness to serve and enrich the world.
May the summer's heat bless you with insight, images and objects, as well as with inner warmth.
Blessings,
Jennifer Wilhoit, Writing Mentor, Guide, Mediator

Spotlight: Capturing Moments in Writing & in Life
|
Though cliché, it is true that "a picture is worth a thousand words." So are found and created objects.
We can use visual images and artifacts as a means for deepening our experience of life. Collecting and compiling them can be a compelling way to savor the moments of our lives, to "note" something quickly that we want to return to more extensively later, to serve as fodder for further image-making. We can also use them to heal and to write, especially when we regard them as meaning-making devices.
Following is a short list (out of infinite possibilities) of ways you can begin to capture moments via objects or images - until such time as you are ready for deeper, more prolonged reflection upon an experience.
- Paste a photo of a special landscape into your journal.
- Include a seedpod or leaf, flower, twig, feather from a hike.
- Items too fat or large for a journal page can be placed on an altar or special shelf, and photographed there. Add the photo of the item to your journal.
- Sketch, paint, or collage something you see.
- Draw an outline or edge of an item from nature, or pencil in a ridgeline you walked.
- Make a list of the key events or people from a journey.
- Note the places you have visited during the summer.
- Write one word that captures the feeling content of a difficult situation in your week. (Doing so over time can help you chart the ebb and flow of your emotional waters.)
- Write a few phrases about what you want to accomplish, experience, feel, or enjoy this summer.
- Use the prompts here to create your own list.
Remember, these can be used later to jog your memory or as reference for deeper exploration. So these need only contain broad strokes of the moment.
Please consider how TEALarbor stories can support you as you move forward with your writing projects, as you traverse a life transition, or as you face a difficult situation of conflict; I welcome your inquiry via email.
