Quote for the Month

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Greetings!

I hope you are having a beautiful spring, observing what blossoms anew outside of as well as within you. I have heard so many stories recently about spring cleaning, preparations for outdoor spaces, and planned hikes getting underway. I see the evidence of what has lain dormant all winter now coming into bloom, flowering, sprouting leaves.

And with all this new life and activity, I also hear people's longing for projects to be complete.

There is a dynamic tension between the energy we use for opening up, blossoming, showing our beauty to the world, starting new projects - and - the stamina it takes to actually harness the joy of new beginnings into focused completion.

Over the weekend, I heard a holy man admit that he often doesn't know how to finish his spiritual orations, how to become quiet, letting his words sink in to the hearts of his listeners. He said, "When we speak and when we write, we need to know when to end. Sometimes this means just ending where we are." These words struck me ... completing our projects sometimes requires that we simply decide to do so. The focus for this newsletter is "finishing".

Blessings,

Jennifer Wilhoit, Writing Mentor, Guide, Mediator

TEALarbor stories' newsletters offer inspiration, encouragement, and
beauty; inform about the connection between story, the natural world, and all things writerly; and promote professional writing, guiding, and mediation services.
Spotlight:  "Finishing" in Writing & in Life
Completion. This is what we strive for as writers of manuscripts, as parties in a conflict, as life transitions sear us, as seekers of holiness in nature. And completing our journeys is a process.

It requires breaking the task or process into smaller bits.

Most people think starting is hard. And it can be. I'm pretty focused on process - to get and keep people writing, moving through the landscapes of inner journeys, finding the spaces that heal and add beauty.

But working on how to finish something is also really crucial. Knowing when you've said enough in the writing, when to move on in the process, when to turn around and find a new path. Completing something can be as hard as starting. But it doesn't have to be, especially if we can trust the quiet voice of knowing and allow who we are in this moment to be enough.

Finishing a journey, or process, or project can be aided by:

* motivation - as simple as saying, I'll keep at it

* accountability - to ourselves and to others

* presence - that we (and our work) are fine, just as we are

* faith - that we have shown up the best we are able to the effort before us

It is all the little finishings that lead to completion. Finish a sentence.

Finish a paragraph or section, or chapter or idea. Reach out to someone for support. Make a decision to end the strife. Take the next little step.

Please consider how TEALarbor stories can support you as you move forward with your writing projects, as you traverse a life transition, or as you face a difficult situation of conflict; I welcome your inquiry

In the News

On March 14, 2015 at CSU East Bay, I presented an interactive writing experience "Stories of Conflict: Writing for Insight as a Tool for Mediating" at the Association for Dispute Resolution of Northern California's (ADRNC) Annual Conference. This lively, two-hour experiential workshop was bookended with scholarly and practical discussion. Participants used images and objects from the natural world, a variety of free-writes, small break-out groups, a Q/A session, storytelling, as well as a large group brainstorming activity to discover how they can use writing to further their service and aims for peace in the myriad models of mediation and conflict resolution they practice.
