Gratitude Practice:

"Shapes"

Choose one big thing for which you are thankful; be sure to pick something that was given freely to you (rather than something you worked for). Draw the simple shape of that which you received. (Love might be represented by a heart, a hug by a circle, good health by a plus sign, natural beauty by a tree...) Look for that simple sign in the world around you; consider each finding of the symbol another freely-offered gift.

Happy Autumnal Equinox!

In a few weeks we will mark the transition into the fall season, that movement toward routines and schedules to hold us steady. In our western hemisphere, it is the time of diminishing daylight, blazing foliage, cooler days. We are held intact by these patterns; we are shaped by them.

When the unexpected occurs - sometimes bringing chaos, destruction, disruption - we are offered an opportunity to step into new patterns that redefine the shapes of our lives - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. The recent earthquake in Napa Valley is one such happening. The modifications of our buildings and material belongings, our relationships as members of this community, our understandings of this particular parcel of geography, and our faith in and reliance upon all those powers greater than ourselves are the new shapes we are stepping into. Now, almost two weeks after this transformative - literally earthmoving - event, we are living with an inner and outer landscape vast enough to hold new openings and shapes we never imagined possible.

Please read the rest of this newsletter to get a glimpse into how the theme of patterns that shape us are woven into TEALarbor stories' next steps...

Blessings,

Jennifer Wilhoit, Writing Mentor & Guide

WORKSHOP - Sit, Write, Walk, Story on the Land

Writing on the Landscape Workshop

September 20, 2014 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

At a natural area in Napa. Fee $65. Pre-registration required.
For details about location & what to bring, email Jennifer.

We will sit on the land, write on the land, walk solo on the land in order to feel more deeply how we are one with the land. Spend time outdoors writing just prior to the beautiful fall equinox. See how the outer landscape of the Napa Valley conspires with the inner landscape of your life experience toward inspired creative writing. Explore how sitting, writing, walking with intention and storying can nurture and nourish your transition into autumn.

Spotlight:  Patterns of a Writer

So many people who come to the work of TEALarbor stories - whether as writers, nature seekers, or life transitioners - are hoping to redefine the shape of the future. A sudden preponderance of fluctuations or changes in daily life patterns often acts as the impetus for contacting me: just enough has shifted so that a person has achieved readiness for the work, to step into their calling (document, new life goals, deeper connection with outer and inner nature, soul nourishment after a dry spell).

Drought. Storm. Fire. Earthquake. Eruption.

These patterns are change agents for a new life shape.

This "re-story-ing" requires a deep look at the geometry of one's experience in the past and one's goals for the future; this can only be effectively and abidingly accomplished via living through the patterns of the present moment. Sometimes these are not as easy to live through as a person would like.

Cliff. Cave. Vast expanse. Gully.

These patterns are the edges of our tolerance and capacity.

But the moment someone takes that first step onto the path, the world conspires to right was has been upset, to write what needs commitment on paper, to create narrative out of what was chaos. Nature, in all her beauty and fury, is a great inspirer for change. When one gets quiet, remains still, observes the fractals in the landscape, opens to guidance, then he is given the gift of insight that allows him to live his Story.

Trail. Bridge. Walkway. Riverbed.

This is the shape of who we are becoming!

What are the patterns in your Story? How does the landscape support your work? How are you led to creative inspiration? Please consider how TEALarbor stories can support you as you find the shape of your own writing and life; inquire via email.
