FROM FATHER RASK

I hope you are enjoying these lovely days of summer...

In June, we welcomed Fr. James Stiles as our new parochial vicar and said goodbye to Fr. James Peterson before he departs for an assignment in Venezuela. Fr. Stiles has already jumped right in with a full schedule of responsibilities and looks forward to getting to know you. Fr. James is making final preparations for his journey and may preside at some of the St. Odilia Masses before he departs.

Our Worship and Community Life Council has planned a very special event on Sunday, July 19, 2015.  Join us in the Courtyard to celebrate St. Odilia with an ice cream social at 3:30pm and a dance at 4:00pm featuring the music of Dan Perry and the Backyard Band.

This month you will be receiving a mailing from the Fall Festival Committee that includes information about raffle tickets and other Fall Festival 2015 preparations. The raffle is a major part of the fundraising effort for the event and you can purchase/pick up your tickets at the ice cream social.

Vacation Bible School begins July 27 and I understand there are still openings available and they need teen crew leaders and helpers.  It's very easy for you to click, register and pay in one easy step.

Stay cool and I hope to see you at the Ice Cream Social!

There are notices from the Archdiocese on bulletin boards, in the bulletin and on the parish website that pertain to the Chapter 11 Case. Every parish must post and distribute these notices informing people of the claim filing deadline on August 3, 2015.  Click HERE for more information.

HELLO AND GOODBYE...

THANK YOU ACTION TEAMS!

A letter to the parish from Deb Peters, Maureen Rehfuss, and David Shearon, Parish Leadership Council At-Large representatives (2014-2015), was included in the July 5/12 parish bulletin and recently sent as a special notice to subscribers of the St. Odilia Community Connection.  The letter updates parishioners on the exciting progress of the action teams that were formed as a result of the feasibility study conducted last fall regarding the potential parish expansion.

In this letter, the new Mission, Vision and Values statement is introduced, which was approved at the June Parish Leadership Council meeting.

Links to the parish letter and new Mission, Vision and Values statement are provided below:

We appreciate your patience and cooperation!

PRAYER GARDEN HELPERS

A big thank you to Girl Scout Troop 54369 for their planting assistance in the Prayer Garden last month!

The members of Girl Scout troop 54369, which includes fourteen soon-to-be 6th grade girls, took on the task of planting a section of the new Prayer Garden. In order to achieve their bronze award, they initially spoke with the Prayer Garden committee and then researched plants, engaged in fund raising activities, and planned the garden.  In the photo above, the girls and leaders are planting and having fun in the dirt!

The girls will continue to take care of the garden this summer.  The bronze award project required them to find a way to help and make a difference in their community.  This award is the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can achieve.

Pictured below are troop members: Kiran, Victoria, Val, Mackenzie, Morgan, Riley, Maggie, Laura and troop leaders; Jamie Walsh, Jessica  Evenson and Jennifer Machtemes.  Not pictured: Sophia, Megan, Peyton, Aaliyah, Isabel, and Natasha.

A NEW PLAYGROUND IS COMING THIS SUMMER!

We are excited to announce the final schematic design for the new playground on the northwest corner of the property!   This playground has been funded and planned by St. Odilia School families.

The playground committee is still working out some of the specific details, but we are well on our way to building a newer, safer, bigger play area, replacing the current playground initially installed in 1995. The current playground will be removed and salvaged by a local company then provided to another school in need. Starting on Monday, July 14, the current playground will be off limits as we prepare the removal of the equipment; however, the preschool playground in the southeast corner of the church will still be accessible.

One of our favorite parts about this project is that we, the St. Odilia Community, will be building it!  We are tentatively planning on August 13-16 for the build, but more information and ways you can help will be coming out as soon as we receive confirmation on the shipping date.

You can read more in the link below that includes the letter to school parents from Principal Brian Ragatz and a schematic design:

Please Welcome Michelle Stone

Hello! My name is Michelle Stone and on July 6, I will be starting athe Junior High Faith Formation Coordinator and Youth Minister, for grades six through eight at St. Odilia.  After years of volunteer involvement in faith formation, I started my employment in ministry almost three years ago when friends encouraged me to apply for the youth ministry position at our parish in Waverly, Iowa. I had been working at the post office for a couple years and, before that, had been able to stay at home with my kids when they were young. In my years at St. Mary's in Waverly, ministry came to be such a gift to me and my family, and it taught us that church is more than just a place you come to once or twice a week for Mass and faith formation. Church is the people, not the building, and the community they come together to make can be a real and transformative presence in its members' lives. Youth are such an important part of that community because they bring unquenchable energy and love for God. I look forward to meeting the youth and families at St. Odilia and continuing the great work that   Logan Crotty has been doing. I hope the St. Odilia middle school youth ministry can continue to be a vibrant, authentic community where young people can experience and grow in their faith!

I currently live in St. Michael with my husband Ben, who works from home as a regional sales manager for Wayne Engineering, based in Cedar Falls, Iowa. We have five children: Elizabeth, Madeline, William, Alice, and John, who range in age from seven to fifteen. We enjoy camping, hiking, canoeing, and spending time together. Our younger three kids will be attending St. Odilia School this fall.    We're all so looking forward to becoming part of the St. Odilia family!

FAITH: THE NEXT GENERATION
PASS IT ON!

Boldly go where many have gone before and help pass on the Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith! This summer, over 600 children and young people, preschool through grade 12, will register in St. Odilia's Faith Formation programs to learn more about Jesus and the Catholic faith. We need to be ready to welcome them this fall.

You can help by becoming a catechist for Faith Formation. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow as well! As one long-time catechist put it, "I learn so much from my students!" We provide you with training, materials, and support. Classes begin in late September.

ST. ODILIA CHARITABLE OUTREACH

"There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy and those who suffer, and to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace." (Pope Francis)

June Green Envelopes:

In June, the green envelope was for "Peter's Pence".  The Peter's Pence collection unites us in solidarity with the Holy Father and his works of charity to those in need.  The quote (above) from Pope Francis addresses our responsibility  before the world.  The collection to the Peter's Pence allows the Holy Father to support victims of war, natural disasters and others in need of assistance. Join Pope Francis and be a witness of charity in the world. Through your generosity, the Catholic Community of St. Odilia contributed a total of $2,640 to Peter's Pence.

July Green Envelopes:

In July, the green envelope is for the annual "Missionary Appeal".  On the weekend of July 11/12 we welcome Fr. Juan Manuel Camacho and Dennis Beltré from the Community of St. Paul from Racine, Wisconsin.  Fr. Juan Manuel was ordained a priest in 2012 and since then has been working in La Sagrada Familia Parish in the Dominican Republic. Dennis has been a member of the CSP for over six years, and is working in the parish as well as finishing his studies in philosophy.

The Community of St. Paul (CSP) is a small international missionary group in the Catholic Church currently working in missions in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Ethiopia.  It is made up of priests and lay men and women from various countries, and is headquartered in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.  Wherever they are present, the members of the Community of St. Paul strive to promote the integral development of all so that they can discover their full human potential and dignity as children of God, with a strong sense of solidarity with those who are suffering, and a particular sensitivity towards injustice.  They do so in promoting and carrying out the sacramental and pastoral work of the Church, as well as through a variety of ongoing development programs.  The collections from the mission appeals given by members of the CSP are used to help support its ongoing service programs, such as: three nutritional centers and scholarship programs in the Dominican Republic; a mother and child center in Mexico; a center for boys living on the street in Bolivia; and a health care and education program for school children in Ethiopia.  The funds from these collections are an important part of being able to keep these programs running.

A second collection, for the mission, will be taken up at all of the Masses.

Did you misplace your green envelope?  You can still contribute to the Missionary Appeal.  Just make your check out to St. Odilia with Missionary Appeal in the memo line.

CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL FOUNDATION UPDATE

Thank you to the 520 parishioners who have contributed $135,065 to reach our goal of $109,599! Now that we have reached our goal, 25% of all funds received from our parish will be returned for use to support our own ministries of worship, education and outreachContributions to the CSAF continue to be important to help us meet our 2014 giving level of $154,672.

One of the organizations funded by Catholic Services Appeal is the Venezuelan Mission where Fr. James will be serving.
