Supply Drive Helps Kids in Need
Kids In Distress (KID) received $9,500 in school supplies and $500 in monetary donations as a result of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue's 3rd Annual Back to School Drive. Read more.

Participate in the Budget Process
As a reminder, Fort Lauderdale encourages neighbors to participate in the budget process. Click here to see the proposed budget for FY 2014. Residents are invited to attend the upcoming public budget hearings, which will take place at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 3 and Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013.

Police Explorer Graduates
Late last month, nine young adults graduated from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department Explorer Program. Students study criminal law, police liability, traffic stops, defensive tactics and crime scene investigation as they prepare for a future in law enforcement. Read more about the program.

Big Toy & Truck
Calling kids of all ages! This free event will be held on Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Holiday Park. Attendees will have a chance to climb and operate a fire engine, fire-rescue and ladder trucks, a front loader, SWAT and bomb squad vehicles, bucket trucks, a school bus, marine patrol boat, electric cart and more. The Parks and Recreation Department's Fit Kidz Club is your passport to fun! Membership allows children to participate in an array of exciting programs throughout the school year at their neighborhood park.  Registration is now open for the 5th Annual Southeast Florida Regional Climate Leadership Summit. Join experts from local governments, along with scientists, nonprofit and business leaders and other stakeholders as they discuss resiliency and adaptation in the face of our changing climate. The event will be held Nov. 7 - 8 at the Broward County Convention Center.

Sistrunk Historic Festival
Save the date for the upcoming Sistrunk Historic Festival, which will take place Feb. 22, 2014. Named after one of the first African-American doctors in Broward, the Sistrunk Festival celebrates accomplishments of people of African descent.

 In 2012, Congress passed the Biggert Waters Insurance Reform Act, which calls on FEMA to make changes to the National Flood Insurance Program.
