Workplace Optimization Strategies:
The Incredibly Shrinking Office
Part One
Thanks to advanced technology, cultural shifts, and corporate downsizing, more companies are seeking new workplace solutions - and turning to experienced Project Managers to help them. Many tenants are demanding creative space alternatives that cut costs, improve productivity, and increase morale. Start-ups and established companies are planning today for the workplace of the future. Whether they are renovating existing space or relocating, they are considering customized strategies to optimize their worksites. Let's take a closer look at the forces behind workplace optimization: Economy. Even as the economy improves, slow job growth continues to stall the recovery. Downsizing has led to reduced footprints in many offices. Technology. Technological advancements allow employees to work virtually, anywhere, at any time. Today, as bandwidth increases on wireless devices, employees typically have at their fingertips all the information they need. Culture. Many organizations have four generations on the same payroll: Traditionalists, Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials. The challenge is to address the different styles and find common denominators. Off-shoring. Companies continue to outsource jobs to India, China, and beyond, where the cost of labor for commodity jobs as well as more advanced work is much less. Tied to these forces, many companies have implemented new workplace strategies with common characteristics, including smaller workstations, sound-masking, space reconfiguration, virtual offices, and hotelling. We will detail more about alternative workplace strategies and how they can work for you in Part Two of this report early next month. In the meantime, have a wonderful holiday and Happy New Year!
