To celebrate the start of the 2013 - 2014 school year, the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District gathered for their annual District Kick off on Aug. 21.

 

Hosted by the district's new Performing Arts Center (PAC), the kick-off celebration marks the start of another academic year by giving campuses the opportunity to come together as a district and set expectations for classroom performance.

HCISD welcomed back more than 18,000 students for the first day of the 2013- 2014 school year on Aug. 26.

Gillman Auto Group partners with HCISD for student attendance program

 

The Gillman Auto Group of the RGV and HCISD have partnered to form an attendance incentive program that aims to improve student performance and increase average daily attendance.

 

The Gillman Auto Group of the RGV Drive for Perfect Attendance Awards program includes over $100,000 in prizes for students at all grade levels for reaching attendance goals throughout the year, including a new 2014 Chevy Sonic.

Eagle Scout hopeful builds outdoor classroom for former campus

 

 

 

Former Coakley Middle School and current Harlingen High School South senior Zachary Gonzalez recently completed a project to help the students at his former campus learn in a new environment.

 

As part of his Eagle Scout project, Gonzalez, with the help of Troup 2101, designed and built an outdoor classroom for the students and teachers of Coakley.

 Coakley Middle School teacher Norma Gonzalez is getting some help from American Electric Power (AEP) to create a new classroom experience for students on campus.

 

Gonzalez, an eighth grade science teacher, was awarded the AEP Teacher Vision Grant this past summer to complete her dream project of building an outdoor classroom for the students at Coakley, she said.

 The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a balanced budget of $162.80 million for the 2013-2014 school year during a special meeting on Monday night.

 

The approved budget is $5.345 million more than the previous year for HCISD, an increase of about 3.4 percent, as a result of an increase in state revenue.
