Captivated by a presentation in a classroom at Harlingen High School, a group of approximately 20 students take their first steps into a field that most individuals will not get the opportunity to encounter in their lifetime. 

 

These students are members of the Aviation Club at HHS. The club's mission is to give students an opportunity to learn the basics of flying an aircraft and open their eyes to the career opportunities that aviation can bring, said Dr. Timothy Jordan, physics teacher at HHS.

Person of the Week: Guzman keeps HCISD connected
  

   

Daniel Guzman has seen technology advance in the classrooms at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. From witnessing the installation of the first computer labs to now seeing students in the halls with iPads, he's been there every step of the way.

 

Guzman is a district Computer Network Specialist. He works daily to ensure that all of the devices at HCISD are booted up and connected for optimal learning.

HHS hurdler qualifies for state UIL Track and Field Meet
  
 

Harlingen High School junior Roman Hernandez sprinted past the competition during the Region IV-5A track and field meet in San Antonio on April 27.

 

Hernandez came in second place during the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 37.64, a personal best. Along with his second place finish, he also qualified for the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Track and Field State Meet in Austin on May 10.

HHSS track athletes selected for Academic All-State
Team  


Harlingen High School South seniors, Jerry Campos and Jesus Martinez, are experts at working hard and managing time on the track and in the classroom.

 

Campos and Martinez were awarded positions on the 2012-2013 Academic All-State Track Team Second Team by the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) on May 2.

HHS trainer selected to enter Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame 

 

 

 

Keeping student-athletes healthy has always been a priority of Harlingen High School trainer Raul Zamarripa, and now, he will be recognized for his almost 30 years of upholding that tradition.

 

Zamarripa was selected to enter the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame (RGVSHOF).

Vernon Pentathlon Team use brainpower to succeed at region competition
 

 

 

The Vernon Middle School Pentathlon Teams found success at the Region 1 Texas Academic Pentathlon competition in Alice, Texas on April 27.

 

Both seventh and eighth grade teams earned medals in every division and came home with over 100 medals earned by the team as well as individual efforts.

The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District is gearing up to celebrate higher education.

 

On May 3, the district joins the community in celebrating GenTX (Generation Texas) Day with a fun fair complete with giveaways, information sessions, music and face painting at the Texas State Technical College Service Support Center.

Congressman Filemon Vela visits Crockett Gallery

  

Congressman Filemon Vela visited the students at Crockett Elementary School on May 1. 

 

KHGN was there to capture all of the action. During his visit, Vela spoke to students about the importance of an education, and gave them the opportunity to ask any questions they had for him.
