"I want to go to Schreiner University," said Samantha Zapata, eighth grade student at Vela Middle School. " I want to be a lawyer. They have a great law program." 

 

Zapata, like many of the students at Vela and secondary schools at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District, are getting an early start on selecting their future university by enrolling in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) class.

Person of the Week: Moreno puts safety first at HCISD
  

                       

With most of his family in education and his passion in law enforcement, it's no wonder that Jorge Moreno has made it his daily goal to help keep campuses and students safe.

 

Moreno is the School Resource Officer at Harlingen High School. He works with administrators to solve any security issues on campus and to find new ways to keep the campus safe.

HHSS UIL academic team named District 32-5A Champions
  

                       
The Harlingen High School South Academic University Interscholastic League (UIL) earned the title of District 32 -5A Champions at the UIL District Meet on March 22.

 

The campus blew away the competition with a total of 400 points in over 10 categories. In addition to being named District Champions, the campus also took home the top sweepstakes prize.

Sam Houston chess earns top marks at state meet
  

                          

The Sam Houston Chess Team continued their streak of excellence during the 2013 Texas Scholastic Championships on March 23.

 

The team placed third in both the K1 and K3 Championship. In the K5 division, the team was awarded 14th place. Individually, Jacob Fox and Alvaro Nieto placed fifth in their respective divisions.

High school boys basketball players selected for All District Team
  

                     

Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South student athletes were awarded positions on the 32-5A All District Team. Players from Harlingen in addition to other students from Los Fresnos, Hanna, Porter, Lopez, Weslaco, San Benito, Rivera and Pace had the opportunity to be selected.

The high school Jazz Ensembles made their mark at the 46th Annual TAMUK Jazz Festival on March 22.

 

Four Harlingen High School and two Harlingen High School South Jazz Ensembles brought back the highest honors.

ECHS students bring a guest for the school's Bring a Friend Social on March 22. The social kicks-off the campus' ECHS Awareness Week activities.

 

Starting March 25, the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District will recognize early college campuses across the nation by celebrating Early College Awareness Week.

HHSS graduate helps others reach success across the globe
  

                

A former graduate of Harlingen High School South is using her knowledge to help others reach success around the globe.

 

Taylor Cavazos Draback, a 2011 graduate, will travel to Costa Rica to help La Asociaci�n CREAR, a non-profit organization, accomplish its mission of providing supplemental educational, recreational, and career opportunities to communities with limited resources.
