For most people, they first get to experience the college atmosphere at 17 or 18 years old, but for Wilson Elementary Students that experience has already started.


Wilson students are learning first hand how a university functions through a new initiative to get students college ready. The campus and classrooms have been redesigned to work like a university. Each grade level and instructional area represents a different department. Departments include Social Services, Education, Health, Engineering and Mathematics, Communication and Science.

 Person of the Week: Galvez builds the tools for education at HCISD
  

                 

Whether you're a student sitting at your desk in class or a fan in the stands of Boggus Stadium, you're probably using something that Guillermo Galvez crafted with a blowtorch and steel.

 

Galvez is the lead welder at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. On any given day, he is handcrafting materials for classrooms, sports facilities and other departments.

Texas Showcase Combines selects Harlingen's J. Lewis Boggus Stadium as venue for RGV football showcase
  
                   

The Texas Showcase Combines (TXSC) has selected Harlingen's J. Lewis Boggus Stadium as the venue for their Rio Grande Valley showcase on March 24.

 

Sixth through 12th grade students from across the RGV will have the opportunity to showcase their football talents to a group of professional third party combine testers.

HHSS Speech, Drama and Debate team awarded sweepstakes at national competition
  

                      

The Harlingen High School South Speech, Drama and Debate team has yet another award to add to their growing list of achievements.

 

The team won the Sweepstakes award for their outstanding overall performance in the National Forensic League Gulf Coast National Qualifier hosted at Harlingen High School South on Feb. 23.

HHS basketball player awarded position on Academic All-State Team
  

                   

Harlingen High School senior Anthony Scallan is not only a great player on the basketball court but in the classroom as well.

 

Scallan was awarded a position on the 2012-2013 Academic All-State Basketball Second Team by the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA).

Memorial Jazz Band awarded top prize at university music competition

                

The Memorial Middle School seventh and eighth grade Jazz band had an outstanding performance at the University of Houston jazz competition on Feb. 23.

 

The MMS Jazz I and II won the prestigious award of being named the University of Houston jazz competition "Best of the Festival".

Students at Harlingen High School are starting to take notice of a new addition in front of the campus.

 

To give students a glimpse into the 2013 Graduation Celebration, both campuses have partnered with Boggus Ford to showcase the top prize to be raffled off in front of the school.

HCISD invites community members to participate in the second annual KidFit Festival, one mile, and 5K on March 2 at Fair Park.

 

KidFit is a "free to the community" festival aimed at helping educate children to live healthy lifestyles through a good diet, exercise, and being safe at play.
