High school students at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District are getting ready to take their first steps towards a national career and technology competition this month.

 

Students are gearing up to participate in the upcoming 2013 SkillsUSA district competition on Feb. 22. It will be the first level of competition for students as they work to advance to the state and national levels. Texas State Technical College (TSTC) will host the competition.

 Person of the Week: Shimotsu shares enthusiasm for education
  

                

This year, Sam Houston Elementary teacher Roxanna Shimotsu has not only helped the students in her classroom but students around Texas by sharing enthusiasm for student advancement.

 

Shimotsu, who teaches bilingual second grade, along with teachers and superintendents from across Texas provided their testimony on behalf of students across the state in the school finance trial.

HHS and HHSS basketball soar above during playoff game

               

The HHS girl's and HHSS boy's basketball teams had an outstanding performance during their post-season games on Feb. 19.

 

The Lady Cardinals soared over Los Fresnos with a score of 36 - 20. With their win, they qualify for the Sweet 16 round of playoffs.

Vernon Middle School students show off problem solving skills at MathCounts competition
  

                      

The Vernon Middle School MathCounts students showed off their problem solving skills at the Region 1 MathCounts competition on Feb. 8.

 

Students competed against 15 other teams in the math competition. The contest had four rounds students could compete in.

Volunteer shares passion for science with Gutierrez ACE program
  
                  

Student involved in the Afterschool Centers on Education (ACE) program at Gutierrez Middle School are exploring the world of science with a true expert in the field.

 

Mr. Lupton, a Winter Texas from Wisconsin and a retired science teacher, is volunteering at GMS two days a week to help students develop a new perspective and passion for science during the after school program hours.

HHS students compete in state business competition
  

                   

The Harlingen High School Business Professionals of America (BPA) Club had a productive performance at the Regional competition held at Weslaco East High School on Jan. 12.

 

Members of the BPA Club qualified for the State competition to be held in Houston from Feb. 27 through March 3.

HCISD Board of Trustees approves resolution to oppose vouchers
  

                  

The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to approve a resolution opposing vouchers, taxpayer's savings grants, tax credits, or any other mechanisms that reduce public education funding during its regular meeting on Feb. 12

 

School boards and school districts were asked to voice their concern on funneling public tax dollars into private institutions.

Bowie Elementary School students and their parents had a fun filled evening bonding and learning together on Feb. 7.

 

Kindergarten through fifth graders part of the Afterschool Centers on Education (ACE) program attended ACE Family Board Game Night at Bowie Elementary.
