When you walk into a Cosmetology class at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District, you'll notice that instead of desks and computers, students will be using scissors and blow dryers to complete some of their assignments.

 

The Cosmetology courses at HCISD are designed for students interested in a career in Cosmetology and Business. The goal of the course is to act as a stepping-stone into a career, and offer educational opportunities to students.

 Person of the Week: Boykin helps HCISD bring technology in classrooms
  

               

 When Kasey Boykin hears her phone ring, she already knows there is a good chance it's someone asking for help about his or her computer, phone, tablet or software.

 

Boykin is the instructional technologist at the Harlingen Consolidated independent School District.

HHSS Basketball named 32-5A District Champion
  

                    

The Harlingen High School South basketball team outperformed Los Fresnos to be named the 32 - 5A District Champion on Feb. 12.

 

The team soared over the competition with a score of 65 - 44 to win the district title during the last game of the regular season.

Lady Cardinals named Bi-District Champions
  

                 

The Lady Cardinals showed the right moves and soared over the competition on Feb. 11.

 

The Lady Cardinals began their playoff quest by defeating the Lady Wildcats with a score of 53-47, at Harlingen High School. With their win, they were also named Bi-District Champion.

High school swim teams make a splash at regional competition
  
                 

Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South Swim teams found success at the Regional swim competition held in Brownsville on Feb. 9.

 

Over 20 HHS and HHSS swimmers qualified for the Regional finals and placed in the top 20. In addition, Harlingen High School senior Miguel Garcia earned first place in the one-meter diving event at the Regional meet.

HCISD chess teams earn top marks at regional competition
  

                     

The chess teams at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District continued to make their mark this competition season by earning top prizes at the Los Fresnos High School Regional Chess Tournament on Feb. 9.

 

The Early College High School, Vernon Middle School, Long Elementary School, Dishman Elementary School and Sam Houston Elementary School chess teams took home prizes during the regional match.

HHSS seniors give back to community with fashion
  

                  

Harlingen High School South seniors Victoria De La Cruz and Giselle Gonzales are giving back to the community with fashion.

 

During the week of Jan. 14 to Feb. 8, the seniors partnered with the "Teens for Jeans" campaign hosted by Aeropostale and Do Something.org to collect slightly used jeans for families in need of assistance.

HHSS JROTC program Exceeds Standards

              

The Harlingen High School South Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets are continuing its tradition for excellence this year.

 

The HHSS JROTC recently earned the overall unit assessment score of Exceed Standards during their external evaluation this Fall.

The students at Long Elementary School are having a fun filled week learning about future career paths.

 

During the week of Feb. 11 - Feb. 15, Long has dedicated a portion of the day to educating students about the different career options available to them.
