The students in Adriana Diaz's sixth grade pre-ap math class at Vernon Middle School spent their afternoons solving problems. They weren't solving riddles or puzzles, but working towards achieving mathematic success.

 

Diaz and her class were awarded the Region One Champions of the LONESTAR Math Cup competition hosted by Think Through Math (TTM). To be named champion, students had to compete in the computer-based competition by solving math problems, and receiving points for every answer found.

Person of the Week: Conway soars above and beyond for HCISD.

 

                

When Mark Conway looks up to the Harlingen sky and sees a bird fly by, you can bet he's on the lookout for his next research project or classroom lesson.

 

Conway is a bird-banding enthusiast, which is the catching, tagging and releasing of birds for research, and the Science Department head at Harlingen High School South.

Choir and band students prepare for All Area Auditions
   
                

Band and choir students at Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South are preparing for the All Area Auditions on Jan. 12.

 

A total of 21 choir and 10 band students are hoping to earn a spot on the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All State Band or Choir. The HHS Choir has more students than any other district advancing to this round of auditions.

ECHS student selected to attend inaugural conference

                 

Jude Ikponmwonba, junior at Early College High School, is looking forward to visiting the world of politics in a big way this month.

 

Ikponmwonba was selected to attend the 8th High School Presidential Inaugural Conference in Washington, D.C. He will be one of 1,900 high school students from around the nation selected to attend.

Harlingen High School South Speech, Drama and Debate Team ranked first in state

     

The Harlingen High School South Speech, Drama, and Debate Team continue its tradition for excellence during the 2012 - 2013 school year.

 

The team is currently ranked first in the state for the most Texas Forensics Association (TFA) State qualifications.

Students at Gutierrez Middle School and Dishman Elementary School opened their ears to a bluegrass experience on Jan. 11.

 

The Abrams Brothers, a bluegrass trio from Canada, treated Gutierrez music students and Dishman fifth grade students to an intimate concert on both campuses

Past students of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District joined forces with School Board Members and administration to help future generations on Jan. 8.

 

HCISD hosted its annual Recent Graduate Luncheon, which allows members of the class of 2012 to share their recent academic and career experiences with school officials
