If you see clouds of flour floating through the air and sprinkles coating the floor at Harlingen High School South, you may be walking towards deliciousness.

 

Cher'rie Yoss and culinary students at HHSS have banned together to start a catering club, which also doubles as culinary business. Like an actual catering company, the club takes orders for baked goods like chocolate cupcakes and sugar cookies for the staff and students at HHSS. The group has been busy baking for their own campus, and creating individually sized treats to be sold during the holiday season.

Person of the Week: Cruz uses creativity to conserve for HCISD

 

   

 

For most people, the question "Did I remember to turn off the lights?" refers to one or two rooms, but for Joel Cruz that means hundreds of classrooms, offices and more.

 

Lights aren't the only thing Cruz, the Energy Manager at the Harlingen Consolidated School District, has to worry about.

High School swim teams have strong showing at Harlingen meet
       

 

The Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South swim teams had an outstanding performance at the Harlingen Christmas Classic on Dec. 1.

 

Overall, the HHS boys and girls team each ranked fourth. The HHSS boy's team placed 15th and the girls placed eighth.

HHS Masterminds soar past first round

                

The Harlingen High School Masterminds team had an outstanding performance during the first round of the televised competition.

 

HHS soared past PSJA to win with a score of 220 - 210. The KRGV Channel 5 News competition is an academic quiz for high school students from across the Rio Grande Valley.

HHSS Speech, Drama and Debate Team soars above competition

             

The Harlingen High School South Speech, Drama and Debate Team took home the prestigious awards at not one but two tournaments on Dec. 1.

 

At the UT Longhorn Classic, the Varsity team was awarded second place overall with only eight students competing.

HHS teachers awarded grant to launch learning

       

 

Teachers at Harlingen High School know how to come together for the benefit of their students.

 

Romel Palomares, special education teacher at HHS, and Ricardo Cattaneo, math teacher at HHS, were awarded a grant to fund a project called "Bottled Rockets" through the Kids in Need Foundation.

Digital classroom instructors ring in the holiday with educational advancement

               

The teachers of Cadre 1 rang in the start of the holiday season with a day of enrichment on Dec. 7.

 

Twenty teachers from Digital Classrooms across the district participated in the first Techmas event. The all-day workshop was dedicated to the development of the premiere set of technology rich classrooms.

Lamar students recycle for the holidays 
    

 

Lamar Elementary School has found a way to be environmentally friendly, and spread the Christmas spirit by participating in a new campus club called the Eagle Recycle Club (ERC) on Nov. 30.

 

Students of the ERC walk around campus every Friday after school and look for recyclables to pick up. With the materials they find, students then create arts and crafts.
