On any weekday, hundreds of middle school students can be heard playing anything from Mozart to Coldplay on something that isn't their iPod.

 

In place of their musical devices, students are playing these songs by using the violin, viola, cello or bass in the orchestra program at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. Students practice daily with their instruments, and gradually learn proficiency by participating in sight-reading, concert rehearsal and solo and ensemble preparation.

HCISD brings KHAN Academy into classrooms

 

  

 

When you ask a student at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District what they are doing on their computer, smart phone or tablet, there is a good chance the answer will not be what you expect.

Instead of Google and YouTube, students are using KHAN Academy, which is an online program that offers over 3,000 free instructional videos for all grade levels.

HCISD welcomes Texas Education Commissioner into transformational classrooms

     

 

The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District welcomed Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams into its classrooms to showcase Texas Public Education on Nov. 27.

 

"We are very proud of the innovation going on in our classrooms and community," said Superintendent Dr. Steve Flores.

Person of the week: Medrano captures the spirit of HCISD

 

         

If you flip through the channels and see a football game, choir concert or graduation ceremony on Channel 17, then you've seen the workings of Joe Medrano.

 

Medrano is the television production technician at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. He produces much of the video content for the department's website and TV station, and coordinates the technical production at HCISD events.

Vernon Band grows to set standard on campus

      

 

The Vernon Middle School Band has grown tremendously in the last couple of years, and with growth has come the successes.

 

The band recently made their mark in Vernon history by earning a total of 24 chair positions at the All City Band Auditions.

 Travis Elementary hosts celebration of learning and activity

             

For the students at Travis Elementary School, their day can be summed up by the phrase "best day ever."

 

As a reward for their hard work, Travis hosted a day of fun and learning for all students during their field day on Nov. 20. The playground and gymnasium were filled with multiple stations where students could participate in different games and activities.

HCISD Counselors get student perspective at ECHS

            

Counselors at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District came together for a twist on their meeting on Nov. 28.

 

Early College High School offered to host the educational session to provide counselors the opportunity to see what a typical day was like for an ECHS student.
