Red and blue covered the halls at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District, as students were able to get in on the voting action during Election Week.

 

Campuses across HCISD have dedicated a week to lessons and activities that educate students on their importance in the voting process. Election Week was held during the last week of October and part of the first week of November.

 Cardinals and Hawks break bread before annual game

      

       

 

Cardinals and Hawks came together to start their day with sportsmanship and a good meal at the annual Bird Bowl Breakfast on Oct. 31.

 

With the annual game approaching, student athletes and student leaders from Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South met in the central administration building to eat breakfast, and discuss the upcoming event.

HHS and HHSS Marching Bands get ready for state competition
     

 

The Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South Marching Bands are continuing the tradition for excellence by moving forward to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Marching Contest on Nov. 6.

 

"Words cannot describe how happy I am for our students," said Shane Shinsato, band director for HHSS.

Person of the week: Gonzalez helps students get on track for graduation

 

       

 

Sylvia Gonzalez has always known she was gifted, not in the culinary arts or musically but in her desire to help others.

 

" I can't imagine myself doing anything else," said Gonzalez. "Everyone has a skill, and helping others is mine."

HHSS Robotics team sweeps RGV BEST Robotics Competition

           

The Harlingen High School South Robotics Team had a memorable performance at the RGV Boosting Engineering, Science & Technology (BEST) Robotics Competition on Oct. 27. 

 

The team was awarded first in the robotics competition, and first in the BEST awards.

HHSS tennis team soars at Region competition
           

 

The Harlingen High School South tennis team had a strong performance at the Region IV-5A team tennis tournament on Oct. 27.

 

HHSS prevailed over teams across Texas to take home second place in the tournament for the third consecutive year.

The Harlingen High School South Speech, Drama and Debate team had a strong performance at the The Tournament of Champions (TOC) qualifier at the ST. Marks Heart of Texas Invitational on Oct. 19.

The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Student Advisory Board (SAB) met for student advancement on Oct. 30.

 

The SAB, comprised of 15 students from across HCISD, represents the leadership in various campus organizations.

Chess teams earn top marks at tournament

   

 

The chess teams at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District had a successful showing at the chess tournament hosted by Palmer Laakso Elementary School in Los Fresnos on Oct. 27.

 

Coakley Middle School was awarded second place in the middle school division.
