For the Early College High School senior class of 2013, they will graduate knowing they've helped prompt the senior class of 2016 for future achievement.

 

 ECHS has started a mentoring program this year, which pairs seniors with first year high school students. The program was started to give all incoming freshmen a strong support system during their transition into high school, said Angel Paxton, principal at ECHS.

Person of the week: Garza brings national guitar competition win to HCISD

 

         

If you give David Garza a guitar, he is going to play it. Whether it's in the classroom or at home, Garza plays to share his passion for music.
 
Garza, the music instructor at Travis Elementary School, was one of ten in the nation selected as the winner of the Chance of a Lifetime competition. He was selected for his ability as a guitarist.

Sam Houston Elementary hosts first chess tournament for HCISD

 

         

Sam Houston Elementary will make Harlingen Consolidated Independent School history by hosting the district's first chess tournament on Oct. 13.
 
 The Oktoberfest Chess Tournament will be in celebration of National Chess Day. The competition will bring together students from across HCISD and the Rio Grande Valley.

HHSS culinary arts teacher enters baking competition to donate prizes to campus
 
         

 

Cher'rie Yoss, the culinary arts teacher at Harlingen High School South, has a knack for baking, and she is using her culinary abilities for a good cause. 

 

Yoss is one of six finalists in the Nestle Toll House Tales competition in the Semi-Sweet Division.

HHSS Speech Drama and Debate team takes home top prize   

   

  The Harlingen High School South Speech Drama and Debate team took home first place sweepstakes at the Texas Forensics Tournament hosted by Bishop High School on Oct. 6.

 

A total of 43 students competed. The team had 12 students qualify to compete at the 2012 St. Mark's School of Texas Invitational.

Gutierrez Middle School and the Harlingen Sunburst Rotary Club are teaming up to bring students the first EarlyAct club in Harlingen.

HHS and HHSS Jazz Bands awarded at Region 28 Jazz Band auditions

 

        

The Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South Jazz Bands had a strong performance at the Region 28 Jazz Band auditions hosted by HHS.

 

A total of 26 students from both schools were awarded chairs in the 2012 - 2013 Texas Music Educators Association Region Jazz Band.

Staff Development hosts Learning Extravaganza 2012
        
The Staff Development Department at HCISD hosted its annual Learning Extravaganza on Oct. 8. The event is an educator in-service, which allows individuals to attend seminars with topics ranging from technology to poetry in the classroom.
