A Message from Your New CEO, Mike Balsamo
It is my great pleasure to address the BIA of Southern California, Inc. (BIASC) Membership for the first time as the Chief Executive Officer of the Association. I am incredibly proud to lead this amazing organization and I look forward to serving at your direction. BIASC is far and away the largest homebuilding association in the State and our members are known for setting national trends in terms of master planned communities and infill development. Thank you to all of our members for setting such a high bar and making the commitment to contribute to the greater good through your BIA participation.
To the best of my ability, my goal is to harness our collective strength to maximize our impact in governmental advocacy; to increase our business opportunities through networking; and to provide educational opportunities for our members. Speaking on behalf of your Regional Office team, we have two primary goals, to serve our members and to serve our Chapter staff teams. Please feel free to call on myself or any of our professional staff to let us know how we can be of service.
Looking forward, we hope to see you participating in the upcoming CBIA Fall Governance Meetings to take place October 10-12 at the Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach. Our own BIASC President, Michael Battaglia of CalAtlantic Homes, is the current Vice Chair of the CBIA Government Affairs Committee which will hold its meeting on the morning of October 11.
Be sure to plan ahead to attend our annual Building Industry Show (BIS) at the Riverside Convention Center on November 9th and 10th. The theme for this year is "Start the Conversation!" Our BIS Committee working hard to plan two content rich and diverse days that will include relevant industry education, opportunity for vendor interaction and of course social/networking opportunities such as the now famous pub crawl. We are actively seeking sponsors for BIS so please consider supporting the capstone event for 2016! To learn more about the sponsorship and advertising opportunities, please click on this link now. Mark Grey's Return-Trip to China Another Great Success!
|
Having made such a great impression during his presentation
at the 2016 Low Impact Development Conference in Beijing in early July, BIASC's Director of Environmental Affairs & Technical Director, Mark Grey, Ph.D, was asked by China's Ministry of Environmental Protection to speak at a follow-up workshop in the historic city of Xi'an on July 21st. Co-hosted by the China Center for SCO Environmental Cooperation and the Global Green Growth Institute, the International Workshop on Green City and Policy Innovation, featured nearly 75 experts and public officials from China, Japan, Korea, Sweden and the United States.
One broad theme to come out of the workshop was the importance of ensuring that decision makers clearly define, with quantifiable metrics, what constitutes a "green" or "sustainable" city, and to create tools and methods that municipalities can use to promote economic growth while simultaneously creating more "green" spaces and places where people can live and work.

BIASC would like to thank Mark for making the long journey to China twice in one month to help represent not only our Association, but our industry as a whole, on an international level.

Anaheim High School Students Take Home "State Cup" and Valencia High School Wins 2nd Place at Statewide Design Build Competition!
|
|
Congratulations to the Anaheim High School Design Build Team!
|
BIASC is proud to announce that students from Anaheim High School and Valencia High School have won 1st and 2nd place, respectively, at the first ever California Design Build Statewide Competition! Each of the two schools is part of the Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) program and had also taken home trophies for 1st and 2nd Place at the 2016 Home Builders Committee (HBC) Design Build Competition held at the OC Fair & Events Center in April.
A result of the partnership between the California Homebuilding Foundation (CHF) and the Sacramento Regional Builder Exchange (SRBX), (who actually held the first ever design build competition some thirty years ago), the Statewide competition pitted the winners of SRBX's annual competition (Luther Burbank and Cordova High Schools) against the two winning schools from the HBC Design Build Competition here in southern California.
The sweltering heat was no match for these dedicated students who were steadfast in completing four playhouse structures at the two-day event held on June 28 and 29 on the grounds at the California State Capitol. Students were welcomed by some of the State's top leadership, Assemblymembers Jim Cooper (D - Elk Grove), Tom Daly (D - Anaheim), Ling Ling Chang (R - Anaheim), and Jim Frazier (D - Oakley), as well as, staff from the offices of Senators Richard Pan, Tom Berryhill, Bob Huff and Assemblymember Ken Cooley. The California Homebuilding Foundation (CHF) is a dedicated contributor to educational advancements through the distribution of scholarships, grants and promotion of certification programs. Attention General and HVAC Contractors: Don't Just Throw Away Old Mercury Thermostats!
|
In California, there are as many as 10.5 million mercury-containing thermostats still in use and many will be discarded as more efficient systems are being installed everyday. Mercury is toxic to the brain, lungs and kidneys and just one mishandled thermostat can pollute 20 million gallons of water! Mercury thermostats pose a serious environmental threat that can only be mitigated with proper handling and disposal.
The Thermostat Recycling Corporation was founded with the sole purpose of preventing these damaging objects to threaten the environment and the public at large.
