Back to the Bible, Part II:
The New Testament Gospels

We know the Bible is important. Or at least we know we're supposed to think so. But it's often hard to find a way into it that feels authentic to our own faith experience. Lots of Bible thumpers claim to speak for it - and even beat others over the head with it. Is there another way? This year, Montview is offering an opportunity to crack the binding and explore the Bible with fresh eyes, not as a book of answers, a how-to manual or a political weapon, but as a library of questions, a place to connect with others and make meaning together. In each session we will explore a biblical passage that at first seems familiar but that turns out to be more, and other, than we expect. This winter, we will focus on the Gospels of the New Testament. No experience necessary. No homework. Just come with an open heart and mind.

Led by Tim Beal, professor at Case Western Reserve University and writes on the Bible, religion, and popular culture (learn more about him at timothybeal.com).

This is an acronym for: S- safe gun storage, M-model safe behavior, A- ask about guns, R- recognize the signs of teen suicide, T- talk about it. The Ask A Doc program is an initiative to get doctors to ask patients about guns in the home and discuss best practices around storing guns so their kids do not get ahold of them.

Traces of the Trade film * February 1
What if you discovered that, 200 years ago, your family's business was buying and selling slaves? That's what happened to seminary student Katrina Browne. Disturbed but curious, she convinced 10 members of her extended family to travel back through time - to Africa and Cuba - to learn and to face their past. This is their Courageous Conversation on Race. Holly Fulton, one of the family who lives in Denver, will facilitate reflections after the film.

Mid-High Service Trip Ghost Ranch - Abiquiu, NM
July 23-29, 2017
Open to incoming 6th grade-graduated 8th grade

CLICK HERE to register and CLICK HERE to pay online

We hope you will join us for the mid-high work trip to Ghost Ranch. We will be working with the Youth Service Corp which is part of Ghost Ranch. We have the opportunity to participate in service work both at the ranch and in the greater Abiquiu, Espaola community. Off the ranch opportunities include work with the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo's Boys and Girls Club; the Sanchez Farm (a chemical free farm that offers its proceeds to elderly and poor) at the San Ildefonso Pueblo; Adobe in Action ( a non-profit that builds adobe houses for low income families); and Christ in the Desert (a Benedictine Monastery) to name but a few.

On the ranch activities include creating Xeriscape gardening; painting and beautifying the dorm social rooms; trail maintenance; Ghost Ranch Farm; etc. All work is contextualized by our partners. For example, if the group is spending a day performing service work on a Native American pueblo, the youth will learn about what it means to be living as a Native American Northern New Mexico at the beginning of the 21st century.

In addition to work, there is time for cultural and recreational activities as well as time to get to know others from all over the U.S. We will be able to have free time, swim, hike, horseback ride and relax. Each day begins with intergenerational worship (short) and concludes with debriefing/vespers.

Cost: $500- This includes lodging, meals, registration, transportation and a Youth Service Corps T-shirt. Horseback riding may incur an extra charge. Financial assistance available.
64th Summer Senior High Service Trip
Oglala Lakota Native American Reservation at Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
JUNE 11-June 17, 2017
GRADUATED 8TH GRADERS THROUGH GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
Cost $700 ($100 deposit with registration by January 15, 2017)
We will be working with the Youthworks organization on the reservation.  They work with local ministry partners returning to the same communities year after year. It is our desire to walk side-by-side with the people living on the reservation in service, helping support the work God is already doing through them. We realize every community we enter has both struggles and strengths, and we have much to learn from them. We will serve through painting, cleaning, yard work, and planning and leading programming for children in the community. Details of specific projects will be available closer to our arrival.

Youth Abroad Endowment Fund

Jim and Amy Hecht have a deep love and commitment to current and future mission work of Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church. Jim and Amy have established a Youth Abroad Endowment Fund that is to be used to help young people ages 16-30 to make service/mission trips and experience life-changing travel. They have held the long term belief that travel and service changes us in many ways and that as Christians we have a duty to share some of what we have been given. In addition there hope is to encourage other Montview members to make gifts to the Youth Abroad Endowment Fund to enable many of our young people to share in the experience of service in the world. We have two eighteen year old young woman who are accessing some of this money to help fund their service gap year experience and we hope many others will consider this opportunity. If you would like to apply for the fund and/or support the fund please contact Rev. Ian Cummins at [email protected]
