Friends,

sheri

A service trip is not just about ministering to others. It's about turning our youth and adults into disciples of Jesus. Taking people on the road pulls them out of their comfort zones. It puts them in a place they may be unfamiliar with. It creates a sense of reliance on themselves and on each other. Road trips can be a road to change. Many times it's the first time they have to work at manual labor projects, spend times with people who are dealing with different life issues than they are, see life's joys and challenges up close, and deal with people who bother them and not have the option to go home at night.

Friendships created on these trips are often quite strong. These experiences bring people together and cement them here. It may be the first time to feel as if God is with them in a very real sense. By leaving what we know on the outside, we leave what we know on the inside at the same time. We open up to new experiences that we see and hear, as well as new experiences that we fell in our hearts and souls. God seems to grow larger in our eyes, more transcendent, and internationally involved. These trips help us gain a perspective on cross-cultural and multicultural ministry. We receive a small exposure to the problems and issues that segregate us. We learn about listening and showing compassion for one another. These trips present a way to understand one another and allow each person to be all they can be in the infinite variety of our humanity - race, ethnic group, gender, sexual orientation - for that is what it means to serve the Christ function. We go believing that showing up is what is important - the ministry of presence that touches others and makes a difference to the people we serve as well as to our own group.
