 Hi Everyone,
This Sunday is commonly known as "Baptism of the Lord" Sunday and we will hear the story of Jesus' baptism as told in Matthew 3: 13-17. It almost didn't happen, of course, because John (the Baptist) thought it was a crazy idea that he should be baptizing Jesus. But Jesus said let it be so for now. It's the right thing to do.
I suppose many of us feel like John the Baptist at some point in our lives when we are asked to do something we don't feel prepared or good enough to do. We ask, "Who am I to be...parenting this child, doing this job, or giving advice to this person?" But clearly God doesn't always call who we think would be the most qualified or the wisest or the bravest to do the job. Maybe you're being asked to do something right now in your life that you don't feel up for. Maybe you can think of 10 other people who you think would do it better. But it's come to you. Your life has presented it to you. And maybe like John, it isn't always ours to know why. It is ours to trust that we can let it be so for now because we sense that it's the right thing to do.
Grace and goodness, Ian
P.S. I hope you can come at 9:15 this Sunday to hear Rev. Dr. Jane Vennard, who is leading a churchwide forum during the Adult Education hour. Jane is a nationally recognized author and spiritual director. She was also one of my favorite professors at the Iliff School of Theology and is a gifted, thoughtful presenter. Click here for more information on the event. I highly recommend it. |
