GRETCHEN SERINIS

Gretchen is one of our amazing Yoga instructors at Annapolis Athletic Club. One of our members says her "expertise of movement and stretching shines in her dynamic classes. Every class with Gretchen is a welcome challenge, both physically and mentally, as well as a peaceful escape."
Gretchen began practicing yoga back in 1999 when she was looking for more balance in her life. She loved running, biking, and swimming but she felt like something was missing. Yoga brought Gretchen great peace of mind and she felt more complete in her body, mind, and spirit. Gretchen aspired to share these feelings with others and decided after years of practicing Yoga, she would complete her 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) program. Currently, she is working on her 500-hour Prana Kriya certification.
Throughout the years, Gretchen has worked with many Club members with specific needs who have benefited from her Yoga classes. She has helped a member suffering from MS,
as well as worked with women recovering from Breast Cancer. She also enjoys teaching Yoga for Seniors, Children, and Athletes. You can try one of Gretchen relaxing and therapeutic Yoga classes:

  Wednesday 6:30pm
Friday 5:30pm
Saturday 10:00am
Sunday 4:00pm

AAC Member of the Month
Vernon Crawford

Our Member of the Month, Vernon Crawford, joined AAC in December of 2009 after his daughter won a FREE one-month membership to Annapolis Athletic Club. Once Vernon came in and tried out the Club for that complimentary month, he "never looked back." Vernon enjoyed working out at AAC so much that he decided to join the Club and workout as often as he could. The Elliptical trainers are his machine of choice because it provides him all the benefits of running without the impact. AAC motivated Vernon to eat better and exercise regularly. Due to all of his hard work, Vernon has lost 80 pounds in only six months! He feels so much better physically and mentally. Vernon says, "It is so great to see people with all different types of physiques focused on a variety of goals at AAC!" We love having Vernon as a member and we are very proud of all his accomplishments!!

Congratulations Vernon - AAC Member of the Month!

Please take a few short minutes and let us know what we can do to make your experience at AAC a better one. For those of you who have already responded to the survey, we can't thank you enough! We have received a lot of great feedback, compliments, and some very valuable suggestions.

If you would like to receive a survey immediately, please give me a call and I can arrange to have the survey company send one to your inbox.

AAC Welcomes our new
Certified Stretch Trainer!

You see her smiling face at the Member Service Desk during the early morning hours, but did you know that Stephanie Disque has a unique stretching certification? Stretching is so crucial to keeping your body healthy and injury-free, and Stephanie is a certified Stretching Trainer.

Stephanie focuses primarily on Fascial Stretch Therapy, a type of stretching that is pain-free and table based. Instead of you stretching alone - Stephanie will assist you by safely stretching your muscles even further. There are many advantages of FST (Fascial Stretch Therapy)....

- Improved energy and blood circulation

- Enhanced athletic performance

- Increased range of motion allowing oxygen and nutrients the opportunity to move into the tissues

Your individual sessions with Stephanie will allow her to focus on stretching your fascia, which is the connective tissue that surrounds the muscles in your body. This type of stretching is not only important for athletes but also for individuals who want to become more flexible when completing everyday activities. Sessions can be booked for 30, 60, or 90 minutes and will follow the same pricing as massage.

30 minute session - $50

60 minute session - $80

90 minute session - $120

Stephanie is happy to advise you and answer any questions you may have. If you would like to make an appointment, please e-mail Stephanie or call
the Member Service Desk at 410-990-1095.

You will be so pleased you did this for yourself!

Fueling Your Workouts the RIGHT Way

Have you ever finished a workout and then spent the rest of the day EATING all of those calories you just burned off....and maybe even more?! Don't worry - it is a common thing to do and you aren't the only one who does it! There is a "right" way to fuel your body so that your workouts don't cause you to rush home to the kitchen and eat everything in sight. Here are a couple of helpful tips!....

1. Carbs are good for you - but don't go overboard! There are three major nutrients that you should focus on after a workout - protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Each of these nutrients help fuel your body - the protein helps to rebuild muscle, the carbohydrates supply energy, and the fats increase your endurance. The key is BALANCE - you don't want to eat one of these nutrients more so than the other.

2. Avoid a REWARD mentality! Many people feel like they've earned that giant hamburger and fries after their workout at the gym, but DON'T DO IT! This mentality generally leads to people overeating the number of calories they actually burned during their workout. Instead, stick to your regular sized portions and choose healthier options.

3. Drink Water! Sometimes our hunger pains really aren't because we are hungry - it's because we are thirsty! Make sure you stay on top of drinking plenty of water on a daily basis, especially if you workout. It's important to drink water before, during, and after your workout. Some people have difficulty drinking water during their workout - you don't need to drink a ton, but make sure you sip on some water to keep your body from getting dehydrated.

4. Eat a Snack! Your body needs to be refueled after a workout, so eating a snack within 30 minutes of your workout is a great way to keep your body healthy and happy. Furthermore, it will satisfy your hunger and you won't find yourself overeating at your next meal. Here's a great example - a whole grain waffle with low fat greek yogurt and one tablespoon of almond or peanut butter. You get all your nutrients in one healthy snack!
