News from the

Albert Einstein Residence Center

October, 2012

Greetings!

Just a quick note to wish you all a Happy New Year and a great October.  Lots coming up this month at Einstein (see our Calendar section) and community-wide (see the Community News section).

I'll be a little busy myself in October---getting my strength back after heart surgery.  Unfortunately, my decades of oatmeal, exercise, eating right and taking fish oil did not seem to work! Maybe I should have used our 100 year-old friend Bobby Avrut's diet of no vegetables or water instead!  Speaking of Bobby, be sure to read about her fantastic 100th Birthday Party below.

Enjoy!

Michael Hayward during the early days of his UN career and today

KOH Library presents "How He Stopped a War!"

Before Michael Hayward retired and moved to Sacramento, he enjoyed a long career as a broadcaster and producer for the United Nations.  Although many in the local Jewish community know him for his volunteer work with a variety of Sacramento civic and Jewish organizations, you might not know about his fascinating time as a radio and television pioneer during the formative years of the U.N.

Michael will share some of his amazing adventures in the intrigue of policy-making in his special presentation, "How I Stopped A War". He'll talk about working with heads of state and famous movie stars when he was Director of Radio, Television and Films at the U.N.

The event is Sunday, October 14 from 4-6:00 PM at the KOH Library and Cultural Center, 2300 Sierra Blvd. There is no charge to attend. For more information, please contact Taliah Berger at 916-541-3720 or taliah@kohlcc.org.

In the spotlight

 Jane Ben-Yehuda

In our February 2012 issue, we reported on Einstein resident, Jane Ben-Yehuda, who had just received a Woman of Distinction Award from Sacramento Hadassah.  We included in our article a short biography of Jane.  Although it gave a lot of basic information about this wonderful woman---who is such an beloved member of our Einstein family--- it made us want to know even more about her.  Here then, in her own words, is another glimpse of Jane's remarkable life.

"In January, 1991, my husband and I left New Orleans to visit Israel because we were considering moving there.  In order to make a good decision, we toured several cities.  Our first residence was a hotel in Tel Aviv.  When we arrived, I noticed several large ships on the Mediterranean whose presence immediately scared me.  For this reason, I suggested we go to Haifa to visit our friend Janet.

"In Haifa everyone was talking about Saddam Hussein and the possibility of his attack on Israel with chemical weapons.  Since we were the only ones without gas mask kits, Janet contacted a military friend and he provided us with these protections.  And not a moment too soon!  That night our sleep was broken with the loud sound of sirens.  We rushed to the room which had been sealed with plastic and masking tape.  Before I went to the designated shelter, I stopped at the bathroom.  Within moments, the whole building shook.  The war had begun!

"The remainder of our stay was spent in defending ourselves.  Saddam Hussein had attacked Israel with Scud missiles.  We were glued to the radio for instructions, which were announced in English, Ethiopian, Hebrew and Russian.  I went through these motions in a trance, and wanted nothing more than to return to the United States where life was normal and peaceful.  My plans of living in Israel were forgotten; we would never return here, let's go home!

"It was three days before we left.  The airports were crowded with people leaving Israel or returning to Israel.  Meanwhile, President Bush began the Desert Storm attack on Iraq.  This was good news for Israel, but I wanted to leave---forever!

"In 1992, my husband and I returned to Israel to fulfill our dream of living there, and we remained for ten years.  How quickly we forgot our frightening experiences, like a mother forgets the pain of childbirth with the coming of a new life."

Bobby has beautiful birthday bash

Bobby Avrut turns 100 this week, and the party that was held to celebrate her advancement into that elite age group was, in a word, beautiful.

To begin with, the Einstein dining room was festive and joyful---perfectly decorated with balloons, flowers and confetti everywhere.  Just walking into the room made the guests happy.  Then there was a wonderful brunch---bagels with a choice of spreads, fresh fruit, cheese, Keugel and melt-in-your-mouth rugelach served by members of Bobby's wonderful family.  (More about them later.)

Then there were the guests---a roomful of people (and there was not one empty chair to be found!) gathered to celebrate the guest of honor.  To borrow from the song, to know Bobby is to love her, and we do, so following brunch, a parade of her friends and family members took the microphone to honor her with poems, messages of love and memories.  A few of us said the same thing: that when we grow up we want to be just like Bobby.

A native New Yorker, a lot of Bobby's family lives on the east coast.  After telling her they couldn't make the cross-country trip for her party, they surprised and thrilled her by showing up!  Among the family members who spoke was our hostess, Bobby's niece, Bonnie Daniel.  It was Bonnie who convinced Bobby to move to Sacramento and the Einstein Center, and it was Bonnie who organized the party.  In her remarks, she acknowledged the help of her family and Einstein staffers including Kellie Duncan, Ashley Finke, Hanane Omari, Yair Luria and Les Finke.  She also spoke with great affection about her "Aunt Bob" and showed us that Bobby's famous sense of humor runs in the family.

There were other highlights in this amazing three-hour love fest, including a wonderful video about Bobby's life that was created by Les Finke.  At its conclusion, Les spoke with great emotion and affection about his friend and what a blessing and inspiration she has been to him.  He spoke for all of us.

Finally, there were probably a thousand pictures taken at the party but none were available at press-time, so we'll show them in the next issue.  Meanwhile, you can watch Les Finke's video about Bobby's life by clicking on her picture below...
