The Case of the Missing Movies
Thief River Falls Library

A problem libraries have had since time began is with people who believe that stealing the material is preferable to checking material out.

On March 29th, Thief River Falls Library experienced that nefarious philosophy in a large dose when it was discovered that someone had stolen the disks out of 25 children's DVDs. The librarians decided that enough was enough and called in their next door neighbors, the Thief River Falls Law Enforcement Center. An officer was sent over and took the information about the disks and about two possible suspects who had been lurking in that area on Thursday.

Since the two early 20s men did not fit the normal profile for people who check out children's DVDs, the men stuck in librarians' memories. One of the two actually checked out The Little Mermaid and pointed out that a disk was missing and he didn't want to be charged with it. Thus, he attracted even more attention to himself and his friend.

Lastly, the two men were noticed because they had just applied for library cards the day before. All in all, the police officer had much to go on, including the names and addresses of the suspects.

In short, a visit on Saturday to their home led an officer to recovering The Little Mermaid which "poof" contained the previously missing DVD and another Leap Frog DVD. This evidence allowed for a warrant to be served, the missing DVDs discovered, and the suspects taken into custody. It does not pay to steal items from the library!!!!

Identifying Backyard Birds & How to Attract Them with Feeders, Water and Native Plants

Northwest Regional Library
Should you stop feeding wild birds at the first sign of spring?  That's one of the big myths in bird feeding.  Truth is:  there are fewer natural seeds and fruits available in spring and early summer.

These days, an increasing number of Americans are offering food year-round to help birds by supplementing what nature has provided - and to add a little drama and song in their yards as well.

Wild Bird expert Heidi Hughes will show you how to identify spring birds and provide tips on how to attract them while minimizing backyard bird problems.
