Christopher Smitherman believes not only that parents should talk to their children about going to college but they should also have a plan to pay for college. Encouraging youth to study hard and do well in school is critical but parents that have no savings sends the wrong message. Smitherman will discuss important college savings strategies.

Speaker Biography
Christopher Smitherman was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and reared here, with his five siblings, by their parents: Dr. Herbert and Mrs. Barbara Smitherman. He attended high school at the School for Creative and Performing Arts. He earned a post secondary degree in criminal justice at The Ohio State University and completed a master's degree in Counseling at Bowling Green State University.
In 1997, Smitherman settled his family in Cincinnati and opened his financial planning practice. In 2009 he moved his financial planning office into the Bond Hill neighborhood. He focuses on helping his clients gain wealth through systematic savings, life insurance, and estate planning.
Smitherman campaigned as a Charterite candidate for Cincinnati City Council in 2003. He was elected and served a two-year term. In 2007, he was elected president of the NAACP Cincinnati Branch. Smitherman campaigned again in the 2011 City Council race. He was elected as an Independent candidate for the 2011-13 term. Currently Councilman Smitherman serves as the Chair for the Law and Public Safety Committee and Chair of Economic Growth and Infrastructure for for the City of Cincinnati. Councilman Smitherman has been married for 25 years and has five children.
