Continue your schooling of Jazz with part II!

This class will examine the development of jazz music from the 1940s through the present time. Geo-political and social issues associated with Jazz music will be explored through listening to and discussing music from different eras, styles and artists. The class will include audio and video recordings to illustrate the stylistic differences and development of bebop, hard bop, Latin jazz, third stream, cool, avant-garde, free jazz, fusion, and beyond. This course will conclude with a discussion of the roles jazz plays in American society today.

The course is designed to foster an understanding

of the social conditions that contributed to the history of Jazz music in the second half of the 20th century and to develop a greater appreciation of this original American art form.
