$1 Trillion. That is the total amount Americans owe in student loans. Overall 68% of students have student loan debt; 60% of students attending public four-year schools and 85% of those attending for-profit four year schools are carrying debt. As if those numbers aren't bad enough, currently there is $85 million of student loan debt past due and on average 63% of student debt holders have to postpone payments.

Compound this debt with a poor job market and this leads to millions of young people with the inability to afford their past while also unable to create a future.

How can we fix this and how can we avoid this?

In this class we will teach you about the types of student loans, the repayment options, and how to prepare for the future. We will outline the dangers of holding too much debt and the threat it creates for the future.  We will also provide parents and future college students with resources and tools to start planning for college now.

This class is for everyone: parents of children of all ages, parents planning to have children, high school students, and current college students.  With a plethora of resources, we hope to help everyone. We look forward to seeing you there!

Speaker Bio

Lauren O'Brien is the Southern Ohio Field Director for Americans for Prosperity.  Americans for Prosperity is a grassroots movement of over 2.3 million activists nation-wide and more than 108,000 activists here in Ohio who advocate and promote limited government, lower taxes, and more freedom.

Lauren grew up in the Cincinnati area, graduating from Covington Latin School before attending Western Kentucky University's Sociology graduate program.  During her time in school, she noticed the increasingly large amount of student loans her peers were accumulating and the detrimental impact on their future and was pleased to work with Empower U to design a program to increase awareness of debt among young people and their parents. She holds a Bachelors of Arts from WKU in Music and Sociology, and was happy to finish college debt free. Lauren has worked on several campaigns across the country but is happy to be back in the Cincinnati area with her dog Kayden.
