St. John on the Mountain
Upcoming Events

November Food Bank Staffing

St. John parishioners will staff the Food Bank Pantry each Saturday in November from 9:45 am to noon. Located at the United Reformed Church, 100 West Main Street in Somerville.  All are invited, including older children, to help interview clients, bag and distribute food.  Sign-up sheets are located on the bulletin board near the Parish Hall kitchen.  For more information contact Sally Hespe.

Food For Fenn

The Outreach Commission has designated November 2014 "Food for Fenn" month in honor of its beloved leader, Fenn Putman, who died this summer. Fenn was an inspiration to us all. We remember his outstanding dedication to the hungry at the Food Bank Network of Somerset County and Grace's Soup Kitchen at Grace Church, Plainfield.  We ask all parishioners to step to up their efforts this month and bring donations of food or money to provide for the hungry guests who arrive at the Food Bank in Somerville every Saturday morning. We have even provided commemorative shopping bags to encourage your donation efforts.

Turkey Collection
Sunday, November 16th

If you would like to bring a frozen turkey to church for the Food Bank, please do so this Sunday, November 16th.  We will collect them that day and keep them frozen until they are distributed on Saturday, November 22nd.  Please note that the smaller the turkey, the better, as many of the recipients' oven space is limited.

Directory Photos to be Taken

Sign-up to meet with Patty Vollmar or Michael Mitchell before or after the 10:00 am service to have your photo taken for our new photo directory every Sunday through December 21st.

Sunday, December 21st

The Annual Christmas Pageant will be on Sunday, December 21st at 10 am.  The pageant is open to all interested Pre-K - 12th grade students.  Please take the time to discuss with your child(ren) the time commitments involved with each type of role and their willingness to perform it.  In order to participate they must be able to attend the required practices.  Forms must be returned no later than November 19th.   Roles will be announced and scripts will be available on Monday, December 1st.  Parent volunteers are also needed.

Thursday, November 20th at 12:00 pm

All are welcome to join us on Thursday, November 20th at 12 noon for the Ladies' Luncheon at the home of Jane McKnight at 257 Douglas Road in Far Hills. Please bring a sandwich; beverages and dessert will be provided.  Please RSVP to Jane at  908-647-6371.

Thanksgiving & Christmas Adopt-a-Family

Help save a struggling family's Thanksgiving and Christmas by providing an uncooked meal.  It's easy!  Just buy the makings for a meal, and deliver it uncooked to your Adopt-a-Family.  A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board near Parish Hall.  Please call Sue Kennedy at 908-234-0267 with any questions.  If you have a particular family you have been supporting in the past, please let Sue know so that she can inform the Food Bank.

Project Warm Your Heart

The Sunday School is participating in Project Warm Your Heart to collect winter clothing for kids in Somerset County.  Children of families served by the Food Bank Network of Somerset County and other organizations will benefit from this winter-clothing drive.  We are collecting coats, mittens, gloves, scarves, and hats for children. Donations are requested by Monday, November 17, 2014.  There will be a box for donations in the chapel each Sunday morning, or donations can be dropped off in the church office during weekdays.

2015 Stewardship

By now you should have received your Stewardship letter for 2015.  If you haven't already done so, please return your 2015 Pledge Card ASAP, as the Vestry needs them to make their budget decisions for the upcoming year.  Extra pledge cards can be found in the narthex or call the office 908-766-2282 to have one sent to you.

Peaceful Parenting Seminar

Wednesday, November 19th

Join the Nursery School on Wednesday, November 19th from 7-8 pm in Parish Hall for a free seminar sponsored by The United Way.  Please email the SJNS Director, Jeanne Williams to register.

Grace Soup Kitchen

Friday, November 28th

10 am - 1 pm

600 Cleveland Avenue, Plainfield

Grace Soup Kitchen serves 1,000 hot nutritious meals the last five days of each month to the hungry of Plainfield.  St. John on the Mountain parishioners help prepare and serve lunch on the last Friday of each month. So that we may plan for an adequately staffed kitchen on Friday, November 28th please sign-up on the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board outside kitchen or let Ward Dorer know that you plan to attend.

Advent Wreath Making for ALL

Sunday, November 30th

Please join us on Sunday, November 30th as we make Advent Wreaths (in Parish Hall).  All materials will be supplied.  A $5 donation to help off-set the cost of supplies is greatly appreciated.

  • Children will make their wreaths at 10:00 (in lieu of Sunday School).
  • Adults are welcome to make theirs immediately following the 10:00am service.

Church Buddies

The Sunday School is still looking for 7th graders and up to become a buddy with a child in the Pre-K/K class.  Once a month the older children will "shadow" their buddies and attend chapel time and Sunday School with them, sit in church with them, and hang out with them after church during coffee hour. It will be a great experience for the older kids and a special treat for our younger buddies. We hope to get the program started as soon as possible. If your child is able to help us in this important ministry by "shadowing" a buddy, please email Devon McKeon or Lynn Mitchell and your child will be matched up with someone. This is a great way to earn community service hours, and we are hoping that this will make a positive difference in our church's youth community.
