DSST Staff Participate in Movember |
|
Several teachers and staff at DSST Public Schools, including DSST: Stapleton and DSST: Cole, took part in the annual Movember, an effort to raise awareness of prostate cancer. During the month of November, men and women across the Denver Metro Area, and the country, join together to raise awareness and funds for men's health issues. Men grow a moustache for 30 days and essentially become a walking billboards for testicular and prostate cancer.

First DSST Student Athlete Signs with Division 1 University |
|
In November, DSST: Stapleton senior Bradlee Cotton made school history when she accepted a full-ride basketball scholarship to Northern Arizona University. "Being the first DSST student to receive an athletic scholarship is unreal because I am leaving a mark in this school that cannot ever be taken away and I am laying the foundation for other students," said Cotton.
At the beginning of her basketball career, Cotton told her coaches she wanted to play center. But coach Geneice Brame warned Cotton that she would play multiple positions due to the small size of the squad. "At first, she thought I was crazy," said coach Brame. "But now, Bradlee can play every position all the way through to the center." Her coach is confident this skill set will allow Cotton to start as a freshman for the Lady Lumberjacks.
A few weeks later, the Lady Knights were ranked number onein the 3A division by the Denver Posts' coaches poll, and considered a top contender for the state title. "I've told the girls to stay grounded and take it one game at a time," said coach Brame. "We want to make sure we're worthy of being ranked number one."
Brame says Bradlee's helps her teammates stay focused, both on and off the court. This is another way Bradlee lives out the core values at DSST and makes her a role model for athletes in all sports. "She leads by example. She walks the walk and talks the talk. She really knows the meaning of team."
"If you put your heart into what you do and actually dedicate yourself to it, you can reach your goals and it makes everything worth it", says Cotton.

Bond Passes...DSST: College View Breaks Ground |

Digital rendering of DSST: College View Middle School

DSST Public Schools broke ground on its fourth campus at Colorado Heights University (CHU) in Southwest Denver. This groundbreaking was made possible by voters who overwhelmingly approved bond 3A and 3B in the November election. "The bond means that our students will have the opportunity to attend our program for 7 years on a college campus and families can send all their children to one place for middle and high school", said School Director Heather Newton.
The first phase of DSST: College View is expected to be completed by the 2013-2014 school year. Currently, DSST: College View Middle School has only sixth graders who attend classes in temporary structures. The middle school building will eventually house grades sixth through eight in 23 classrooms. In the second phase of the project, DSST will build College View High School onto the middle school, and add one grade of students each year. By 2019, DSST: College View Middle and High Schools will be at full capacity and are expected to serve over 900 students in Southwest Denver.
DSST: College View is one of six DSST Public Schools located on four campuses throughout Denver, serving over 2,100 middle and high school students. DSST's vision is to expand its network to include 10 campuses across the Denver Metro Area by 2020, serving over 4,500 students, nearly doubling the number of four-year college-ready DPS graduates.

2013-2014 School Choice Process Begins |
|
For the first time last year, Denver Public Schools made history by creating the nation's first city-wide open enrollment process for all students. The process, known as SchoolChoice, creates an environment where students can find and preference the schools that work best for them. In addition to being a great way to bring opportunity to students who normally would attend their neighborhood schools, this process helps the greatest number of students attend the best schools in the city. Each family is asked to list their child's top five choices of which school to attend the following year, and students are sorted into those schools (or entered in a school-specific lottery) based on availability.
DSST Public Schools has opted to partner with DPS for the second year to ease the process for families applying to one of our campuses. Families will not be asked to fill out an additional preference form or application-all families who wish to be included in a DSST school lottery need to do is preference one of our campuses in their top five. Each DSST campus has specific lottery groups that drive our enrollment (see the Enrollment Info page below for more).
Across the network, DSST will be accepting nearly 900 new students for the 2013-14 school year. Currently we serve approximately 2,100 students at six schools across Denver. Our fifth campus, DSST: Byers, will open in June of 2013 with 140 sixth grade students. For more information about DSST's growing network, please see our website.
