Greetings!

Brigadier General Burdett K. Thompson '82

We are pleased to announce that Ferrum College alumnus Brigadier General Burdett K. Thompson '82, USA Deputy Director for Strategic Planning and Policy, U.S. Pacific Command, will be our commencement speaker on Saturday, May 10, 2014.

Thompson grew up in Franklin County and graduated from Ferrum College in 1982. He is believed to be the second general educated in Franklin County since Confederate General Jubal Anderson Early, who was born in Rocky Mount and fought in the Civil War. Thompson holds three master's degrees and served in Korea, Panama, and Iraq. His past assignments include ranger, paratrooper, and two prominent airborne divisions-the 82nd and the 101st. Thompson's current assignment is at Camp H.M. Smith in Hawaii.

This will be our "centennial" commencement, the culmination of a year and half of Centennial celebrations, and we could think of no more fitting person to honor our graduates on this day. Learn more about this year's commencement here.
