Money Matters

Members Writing Deposit Slips

In the Money Matters program teen members boost their financial literacy. Members work in small groups participating in group projects and discussions. They cover a wide range of topics that include everything from:

  • Learning how to fill out their taxes
  • Simulated household budgeting
  • Saving and planning for college
The Money Matters program is offered biweekly to members in 6th grade through 12th grade.

Thanks to the support of Charter Bank, our teen members have availability to resources and tools including blank checks, deposit slips, and calculators, just to name a few. Without their assistance our teens would not have gotten the same hands on learning opportunities.

 Sponsor Spotlight - Charter Bank

Charter Bank Eau Claire

Charter Bank is a local, independently owned community bank serving the Eau Claire community.  They provide not only great services for their members, but to the whole community by making it a priority to give back to organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Chippewa Valley.

In 2014, Charter Bank sponsored the Money Matters program teaching financial responsibility and independence among teen Club members.  Within the ongoing program, Teens learn how to manage a checking account, create a budget, save and invest, start small businesses and pay for college. The program directly addresses the realities teens will soon be facing in adulthood by bringing financial literacy to teen members at the very time in their lives when they most need to develop these skills.

Not only has Charter Bank sponsored the Money Matters program, but have given to the Club in other ways as well.  They have sponsored youth memberships, for those members who need a scholarship to join the Club.  Charter has also participated in numerous fundraising events such as the Annual Steak & Burger Dinner and Evening of Wine & Cheese.

Thank you Charter Bank for your generous support to our Club!

 Anti-Bullying Campaign

During the week of spring break in March, the Club offered all day programming to members. In Torch club and Keystone club members created an anti-bullying video.  The video will be shown at Karate America's Anti-Bullying Event held at the Club on Friday, April 24th, 2015.  Members were taught the film-making process including writing scripts, memorizing lines, and videography. Filming and editing took place on the iPads that were purchased from a technology grant from Royal Community Credit Union.

WQOW News 18 visited the Club to film the members at work and ran a story on them to promote the Anti-Bullying Event in April. Creating these videos allowed members to act out scenarios that reinforced positive methods for handling bullying situations they may encounter in their everyday lives.  When asking members what they learned from this program, teen member Theodo re responded, "I learned that it takes a script, camera, footage and editing to make a movie and getting along with each other."

This was a great experience for members.

Thank you to the community and all the partners that made this possible.
