January 2014
Payless Shoes Grant Gives Extra Holiday Cheer to Boys & Girls Club Members

Thanks to a wonderful grant opportunity through Payless Shoes Source, each Club member was offered a brand new pair of socks and shoes from the local Payless Shoes store.  Members and their parents/guardians provided staff with their preferred shoe style, color and size and Club staff shopped at Payless Shoes to fulfill member requests.  The shoes were given out just before the holiday break, providing extra cheer to many families in need.  Members were thrilled with the trendy and colorful shoes that Payless Shoe Source had to offer.

Thank you Payless Shoe Source!

Transportation Updates

Transportation is now being offered from Downsville Elementary School to the Club each day after school.  This is a great opportunity for youth tDownsville students that would like to attend the Club can ask the School office for a membership application and/or parents/guardians are always welcome to contact the Boys & Girls Club with questions.

Transportation will begin on January 19, 2015 from Oaklawn Elementary School to the Boys & Girls Club.  While the transportation is available, please note that we do have limited availability due to transportation seating.  We offer a waiting list and will be contacting families as seating is available.  Parents/Guardians are more than welcome to bring their child(ren) to the Club if they are able to transport them after school.

Coming Soon to the Boys & Girls Club...
The Boys & Girls Club has a handful of collaborations that will be taking place throughout the month of January, that will provide even more fun opportunities for our members!

The UW-Extension Nutrition Coordinators will be joining us to provide enhanced opportunities in our Healthy Habits programming through the Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program.  The programming that they teach will have a strong focus on healthy meals and balanced nutrition, teaching our members how to live a healthy lifestyle.

We will also have the opportunity for members to take part in some science projects through local 4H outreach!  Teaching members about local 4H programs will also allow them to expand their opportunities outside of the Club, with a focus on communities and collaboration.

The Boys & Girls Club will also be creating local movie stars!  Club members will be creating a series of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) videos at River Heights Elementary School, to be shown to all River Heights students as a reminder of positive behaviors.  The creation of the videos has been set as a week devoted to Drama Matters and Club Tech, allowing members to learn about acting, props, directing and all the technicalities in creating a video.  The week will end with a cast party, celebrating the success of a job well done. To learn more about the PBIS program, please visit www.pbis.org.
Wisconsin Weather Affects Club Schedule
With additional months of Wisconsin weather approaching, we wanted to take the opportunity to talk to both parents and community members about how cold weather affects the Boys & Girls Club. During times that the school is closed due to inclement weather, the Club will also be closed for programming.  Right now, the Club follows the School Schedule.  If at any time the Club is closed due to school closings, there will be a closing notification on local radio stations, tv stations and social media outlets.

While the Club is open for programming, weather can also affect our ability to take part in outdoor activities at the Club.  We also follow school policy closely and will not allow outdoor programming if the weather is below zero degrees, which includes the wind chill. Our primary concern is that of our member's safety.  We want to be sure that members are staying safe and warm when Wisconsin weather is upon us.  If you have any questions about our weather policies, please do not hesitate to contact our office by telephone or by email.
Early Release Days
The School District of the Menomonie Area has early release days coming up on January 28th as well as February 25th.  We are OPEN on early release days, offering members additional programming time, as well as additional time for volunteers to assist at the Club.  The Club will be open for half day programming on Early Release days from 12:45 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Club Wish List
The Club would like to reach out to the community with a wish list of items, as we have had a lot of questions about immediate needs of the Club.  While we have a wonderful building and resources here at the school, there are items that we are searching for to further expand our programing.  If you have any questions about items, please do not hesitate to contact the Club directly.
