Only 9 more days till Early Bird Deadline.

It is hard to believe but in less then two months many of us will be preparing to launch our boats and get ready for the 2013 Lake Ontario Offshore Racing series. It was great to see many of you at the boat show, and how excited everyone was about the 2013 season. We have already received notice that boats from Quebec, Lake Erie, and many of our American friends that they are preparing for the challenges that the races will bring them this summer on Lake Ontario.

Dont forget to take advantage of the early bird rates that will expire for the Susan Hood Thropy Race and Lake Ontario 300 Race on Feb 28, 2013.

Sincerely,
Darren Gornall

Offshore Racing Safety Seminars

The Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) committee is running a Safety Seminar for all sailors at a variety of different clubs on the lake. (See dates below).

This information session is recommended for anyone who wants to learn about some of the recent rule changes to safety on Lake Ontario. The seminar is moderated by Guy Perrin (Member of the Sail Canada Offshore Working Group & Editor of sail-world.com/Canada) and a team of experienced Lake Ontario offshore sailors who will inform you and answer questions on all aspects of sailing safety.

The seminar provides novice and experienced mariners with information and skills required to prepare for sailing offshore, boat preparation, and recommended safety equipment. We hope the variety of locations that one will be close to you and we will see you there.

Over the weekend of January 25-27, five LO300 veterans and GLSS sailors (Ted Spanos, Gene Joelson, Chuck Watson, Bert Barrett, and Brent Hughes) travelled to Chicago IL for the Annual Great Lakes Single Handed Society AGM and the Strictly Sail Show at Navy Pier.

Chuck Watson of Frenchman's Bay YC (FBYC) became the 12th Lake Ontario Sailor to be granted lifetime membership of the GLSS during the evening's ceremony.  The picture above is the presentation of the GLSS Solo Plaque for the 2012 LO300 Challenge to; Ted Spanos (Mythos-PCYC), Gene Joelson (Joeley Rose-PCYC), and Chuck Watson (Why Not-FBYC).

Brent Hughes (Pearl-FBYC) was elected to a 3 year term on the GLSS Board of Directors, where he will work to maintain and grow the link between the GLSS and the LOORG.  Brent is hoping to see the GLSS membership grow from 12 members to 25 members during this term.

The GLSS was formed in 1979, and currently has less than 250 members in the Society.  Membership is granted after completing a sanctioned Solo Challenge on one of the 5 Great Lakes.  For more information on how to become involved during this season, please contact Brent Hughes at 416-984-7967, or bhughes@ucci."
