Coaching a Female Team?

Coaching a female team can be drastically different than coaching a male team. Inherent differences between males and females (e.g. physical, psychological) bring up a number of considerations for coaches.

Coaches BC has created a PDF to highlight some of these considerations so that you may adapt your coaching appropriately. It is also useful for coaches of male teams to take a look at, as many of the tips are not gender-specific. Click here to read more.

Spectators Area and Technical Area
As cup play approaches please remember wherever physically possible, to adhere to the FIFA and BC Soccer rule that team benches should be on the same side AND spectators should be placed on the opposite side.  As not all parks physically allow for this it is expected spectators will maintain a distance of 20 metres to the benches if they are on the same side.

Please also remember, wherever possible to create and always respect the technical area for team officials.

FIFA guidelines on technical areas
  • Technical area extends one metre on either side of the designated seated area and extends forward up to a distance of one metre from the touchline

  • Only one person at a time is authorised to convey tactical instructions from the technical area

  • The coach and other officials must remain within its confines except in special circumstances, eg. a physiotherapist or doctor entering the field of play, with the referee's permission, to assess an injured player

  • The coach and other occupants of the technical area must behave in a responsible manner

End notes

Congratulations to Head Coach Andrew Latham, a recent presenter at the NCSAA conference in Philadelphia. Andrew presented his research conducted at LISA on small-sided games, which can we heard in person by attending the FREE coaching session on January 31 at 7pm at PISE.

While LISA and the club presidents will not be making any changes to the current U12 teams for next year (in other words they will play full-field as U13 teams), more research and education will be forthcoming for future generations who can expect modifications to the rules at U13.

Thanks to Lakehill for completing officials training for 40 people and Saanich Fusion/Prospect Lake for hosting a full-field referee course in January.

Stay tuned to our website for LISA Scholarship opportunities.

Who's on your team?

Frank Woods

If you don't know Frank Woods let me tell you about him.  We recently welcomed him back to the LISA family after a lengthy trip to Indonesia where he was coaching soccer.

Frank is a proud member of  Vic West FC, who were recently inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame for their teams from 1976-1984.

Previously Frank has been the technical director at Lakehill and has also been known to help out the Victoria Highlanders.

He has coached LISA teams at Metro, Super Y and we are pleased he has just started helping coach the Boys 2000 BC Soccer Premier League team.
